18 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2 “Go down to the potter’s house, and there I will give you my message.” 3 So I went down to the potter’s house, and I saw him working at the wheel. 4 But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.
We are in the potter’s house. We are the clay that the Lord is shaping. Just like moms and dads decide what is best for their children, the good Lord decides what is best for us. Proverbs 16:9 says, “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps.”
Our part in God’s plan is to be available for His workmanship. What good is the clay if it is not in the potter’s house? What good are our intentions if not for the work of God? Raising children is a long-term goal, just as God shaping us into His masterpiece can take time. You don’t go into battle with a sword that has been fashioned in a hurry, full of weak points. The Lord is refining you into something that will be used by Him for His purpose.
On the Discovery Channel, there is a show called Forged in Fire. The show is a contest between people making swords and weapons of war. The blades get tested, and only one wins the prize. The others, well, they are okay but not good enough. Typically, the losers have imperfections that cost them the win. Have you given your imperfections over to the Lord so He can work them out? Your life may look great, but under pressure and testing, your imperfections will come out and cost you victory. Allow the Lord to work out those imperfections, fashion the lump of clay, and in time, under the Lord’s hand, you will emerge victorious in Christ. Are you in the potter’s house?
Prayer: Father, I pray that we humbly put ourselves in Your hands. I pray that we posture ourselves to be used by You in every way, all the time, and anywhere. In Jesus’ name, amen.
