The Power of Saying Yes

“Come, Follow me.”

Mark 1:17

This past weekend, my wife, Kaity, and I went on a walk to the local basketball court to shoot some hoops. Normally, we play a game of Horse or Around the World, but this past weekend was different. There was a group of six people playing on the other end of the court. All of a sudden, they came up to us and asked if we wanted to play some 4-on-4 with them. I gladly accepted, but Kaity was a lot more reluctant.

For those of you who know Kaity, you know that she is a photographer and doesn’t like sports unless we are playing together, but most importantly, she had never played pickup basketball before. They peer-pressured her into playing, and the most unbelievable thing happened. She ended up scoring twice, grabbing multiple rebounds, and we won the game with a game-winning three-pointer!

The moral of the story is that you never know what talents are hidden inside of you until you step outside of your comfort zone and say yes.

In the story above, Simon and his brother Andrew were ordinary fishermen casting their nets into the lake. Jesus then came up to them and said, “Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” At once, they left their nets and followed Him. (Mark 1:18) This one moment with Jesus completely changed their lives forever. They didn’t know it yet, but these two disciples would go on to have an incredible journey, and God would use them in mighty ways. It was all because of a simple decision on an ordinary day: they said yes to the call of God.

What simple decision is God calling you to make today? It could be as simple as saying yes to a friend who has been inviting you to a church service or small group. Or maybe you are called to forgive that person you have been holding a grudge against. Or maybe it’s finally using that gift or talent God has placed inside of you despite the insecurity and doubt that’s holding you back. It could be singing, writing, serving, or (in Kaity’s case) basketball.

In 2 Timothy 1:7, the apostle Paul writes, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” Let me encourage you to let today be the day that you conquer your fear. No matter how old you are, God has great plans for your future. I’m not saying don’t be realistic, but it is okay to dream big sometimes. One of my dreams is to be a best-selling author one day. I will never get there if I don’t put myself out there with my writing, step out in faith, and keep believing that God can use me in big ways.

My prayer is that you are blessed by these blogs and that they inspire you to step out in faith, trusting that God can make it happen. Remember: It might feel small, but even the smallest yes can lead to something greater than you ever imagined.

Prayer: Lord, there is nothing better than going on this journey with Jesus. The greatest decision of my life was when I said yes to Your call. When I said yes to You, I was not only forgiven of all my sins, but I also received a reserved spot in heaven with my name on it. Today, I choose to remember that You have not given me a spirit of fear but of power, love, and a sound mind. It might feel uncomfortable sometimes, but I want You to use me and help me accomplish all that You have for me. Continue to use Doug’s and my blog to reach people all over the world and inspire them to grow closer to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
