“The crowd laughed at him. But he made them all leave, and he took the girl’s father and mother and his three disciples into the room where the girl was lying.”
After working in the warehousing industry for around 5 years now, I have learned an important lesson: space is the most valuable asset. It is very important to organize and arrange the environment so that there is space to operate, organize, sort and receive items in. The key is to utilize every square inch of the space that you are given so that the warehouse can function properly and at it’s full potential. A couple of ways to do so are by throwing old items away that no longer serves a purpose, consolidating items with other like-items for the same customer, stacking empty pallets, or putting items on racks that is just sitting on the floor. The purpose of all of this is to make room for the new inventory coming in.
Jesus had to do a similar thing in the verse above. After being told about how Jairus’ daughter had died, Jesus, Peter, James, and John went to Jairus’ house to perform a miracle. When He arrived, the space was filled with people crying, wailing, and doubting. He walked in and said “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.” Then they laughed at Him.
After that, Jesus cleared the room except for the child’s parents and His disciples. Once he removed the unbelief, distraction, and noise around him, he could finally perform his miracle and bring new life to the girl. He removed the doubt in the room to make space for faith and faith is what Jesus needed to perform the miracle.
This applies to our own lives as well. Sometimes God wants to bring something fresh and new into our lives but we are still holding on to the old clutter of doubt, fear, distractions, or anything else that no longer serves a positive purpose. Just like the warehouse needs space to receive the new that’s coming, our hearts and minds also need to be cleared of negative mindsets and patterns that don’t align with the future that God has for us.
The prophet Isaiah says, “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” (Isaiah 43:19) Try today to think of some things you could either get rid of or put in their proper place to make room for the new thing that God is bringing. By getting rid of the old habits and clutter, remember that you are making space for new life, new relationships and new blessings. So start small and think of just one thing to get rid of. Before you know it, this small step could be the beginning of a miracle.
Prayer: Lord, I thank you that you are always up to something new in my life. You don’t look at my past, mistakes, sin, or failure, but instead you choose give me a future that is full of hope. Help me to make space for the new that is coming by getting rid of anything that is prohibiting me from moving forward into the future that you have for me. Whether it is a relationship, a negative mental pattern, or a destructive habit, I choose today to lay it all down at the foot of the cross and make space for you to move. In Jesus name, amen.
