Be Still and Know

Exodus 14:13-14

13 Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. 14 The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

I remember one summer in college, I found a website that sold NBA jerseys on sale. So I decided to buy 4 different jerseys: Steph Curry, Kawhi Leonard, Chris Paul, and Kevin Durant all for under $100. What a deal! However, what I didn’t know was that this website was similar to wish.com and the jerseys were shipped all the way from China. After waiting almost 6 months, I decided to try and get a refund but it was too late so they sent me 4 more of the exact same ones. A whole year later, I ended up with 8 knockoff jerseys from players that most had already swapped teams by the time I got them! The point of the story is 1. Don’t buy knockoffs jerseys from China and 2. Some things take a long time to come to fruition.

In the passage from the verse above, the Israelites stood on the edge of the Red Sea, trapped between Pharaoh’s army behind them and the raging waters in front of them. Of course, most of us know what happens next, Moses lifts up his staff and miraculously the sea split in half allowing them to walk through without a scratch. However, they did not know that was going to happen in the moment. They were fearful and desperate so they began to complain and wish that they had gone back to slavery in Egypt. But Moses stands up and says something powerful: “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today… The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

We live in a world that glorifies instant satisfaction. I mean we can buy anything we want with just a few taps on our phone. Need groceries? Order online and have them delivered within the hour. Want to watch a movie? No need to go to the theater, just stream it instantly. With so much control at our fingertips, the idea of waiting has become almost foreign to us.

How often do we carry the same mindset in our relationship with God? When a promise of His is taking too long in our lives we decide to jump in and allow our thoughts to take control. “Maybe He didn’t give me this dream.” “Maybe I am destined for failure.” “Maybe I should just settling for average and stop trying.” We come up with a million excuses for why it will never work, instead of standing firm in our faith and trusting in God’s plan.

Today, take a big deep breath and remember Psalm 46:10 “Be still, and know that I am God.” When the promise is taking a long time, don’t panic and try to fix things on your own, be still and know that God is in control. He will make a way where there is no way and accomplish everything that He has spoken over your life. He won’t let you down.

Prayer: I thank you for your amazing power. The same power that made a sea into a highway and the same power that rose Christ from the grave lives inside of me. Whatever I am facing, no matter the odds, I know that you are in control and will accomplish your perfect plan for my life. So today I can live with freedom and joy knowing my future is secure and that it will all work out for my good. In Jesus name, Amen.
