Backwards

Jeremiah 7:23-24

“But this is what I commanded them, saying, “Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you will be My people; and you will walk in all the way which I commanded you, that it may be well with you.” “Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but walked in their own counsels and in the stubbornness of their evil heart, and went backward and not forwards.”

Have you ever been driving down a one-way street and seen someone turn and start driving in the wrong direction? You honk your horn several times, desperately trying to get their attention. You even yell at the car, even though your windows are up. Why? Because they’re driving in the wrong direction and could get into a wreck. You also want to warn them that the road they’re on is a one-way street, and they cannot go the other way.

Imagine your Christian walk with the Lord as a one-way street. All the signs read “One Way!” (the Bible). The people around you are following the signs and moving in the right direction. Sure, on occasion, we see someone new to the roads of Christianity turn onto the one-way street in the wrong direction. This person is quickly met with multiple warnings and sound guidance from trusted souls who have been traveling this road for some time. They quickly turn around and begin following the rest of the one-way travelers for Christ. We can call these souls new to Christ—just learning the way, so to speak. They are easily influenced and eager to learn the way of Christ.

Now, imagine someone else turning onto the one-way road of Christ, but this time, we notice they are not listening to correction. Instead, they keep moving in the wrong direction. Worse yet, you see other souls in their car instructing the driver to ignore all the warnings and keep going the wrong way. Shocked, you try to get their attention, but to no avail. Soon, you pass them, continuing in the right direction, hoping someone can reach them. Eventually, a wreck happens, and you already know who is involved. If only they had listened to the guidance they were given, they could have avoided the crash.

By now, I can feel my own life playing out on this one-way road of Christianity. I can remember times when my car got turned around, but praise the Lord, I heeded the direction of others and turned my car back the right way.

Today, if you’re reading this and the Holy Spirit is telling you, “You’re going the wrong way! Turn and follow Me!” please listen, I pray! Don’t wait for a life wreck to happen before you realize you were going the wrong way!

The one-way road of Christ is not for strange folks stuck on some old-fashioned way of living. Go the wrong way in life, and you’ll soon find out just how backward and destructive it is to live against Christ. Turn around and move forward! Stop this backward, self-guided, misled way that will only lead to disaster. Christ is waiting—His arms are wide open. Turn around!

Prayer: I pray today that whoever is reading this will turn around and follow Christ in all they do in Jesus name. I pray, Father, that you put people in their lives to warn them and to tell them to turn around. I also pray for strength to keep following the Lord in all we do. In Jesus name, amen.
