Do You Have Any Mighty Men?

1 Chronicles 11: 10

10 These were the chiefs of David’s mighty warriors—they, together with all Israel, gave his kingship strong support to extend it over the whole land, as the Lord had promised”

In the oil and gas world, some companies have to make a report that tells investors how much oil and gas they have produced and how much they plan on producing in the coming year. It is called a reserve report. If it is done internally then the report has a biased built in. This is why there are companies that only do the work on getting this reserve report ready so when the report is done it has little to no biased built in. This is why is a good way to judge the financial strength of the company. The people who do this work are very very smart engineers and geologist. They get graded on how close to reality they predicted from the previous year. They do hundreds of reserve reports a year and have seen most everything more than once. They are the rockstars of reserve reporting because they have seen and analyzed so much data that the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) rubber stamps their numbers and investors can accurately judge the companies financial strength.

King David has a group of rockstars called his might men that became his backbone for a strong kingship. They supported the king and all he did from the home front to foreign battles. Chapter 10 outlines over 46 of these mighty men but it highlights the top three. They are Jashobeam, Eleazar, and Abishai. Abishai is the only one who was an Israelite. In fact, most of the mighty men are not Israelites at all. They are from all the surrounding countries that Israel had defeated or neighbors. David’s mighty men did not answer an add in the local newspaper, no they were banded together when David was on the run from Saul. He met all these men during that time when Saul was oppressing their people. Over the years running from Saul, these mighty men grew to be the backbone of David’s armed forces and so much more.

Jashobeam killed three hundred men with a spear in on encounter. Eleazar was with him fighting off the Philistines in the middle of field. Abishai also killed three hundred men in one encounter with a spear. These three also broke through Saul’s army just to get David a drink of water from the well at Bethlehem. These were some bad dudes, the ones you would want on your side for sure. A man named Benaiah was David’s body guard. One of his exploits was killing an Egyptian 7 ft 6 in tall. He took his spear and killed him with a club. He also killed a lion in a cave on a snow day. These men made up David’s backbone of power and security, they were the rockstars of his kingship.

So what does this have to with us you might be asking. We can learn a lot about life from David. He wrote most of the Psalms and was called a man after God’s own heart. He surrounded himself with his mighty men for security and was a good king to the people.

The first question you should ask yourself is who is around you every day? Those are your mighty men or are they? They all don’t have to come from your closest friends they could be outsiders who you grow into a friendship with. These people should also have your best interest in mind even when you are at the bottom of life. They don’t turn and run when trouble comes, they stand and fight along side you and even protect you when you are not strong enough to defend yourself. These mighty men have special places in your life that only they can fulfill. You keep them close because you know they will give you good counsel and call you out on wrong doing as well. Proverbs 13:20 tells us, “He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will suffer harm.” The question you need to ask yourself is do you walk with wise men or are your friends the companion of fools in the verse above?

Don’t go any further down the road of life without the wise, mighty men or women surrounding you. For those of your who watch the Kendrick Brothers movies there are two films, The War Room and The Forge. Two films you must see. Miss Clara is an old women who is a mighty women of God and in these films she is one of mighty women that supports and fights for God’s kingdom. We all need a Miss Clara. Women like Miss Clara have one thing in common with every might men, they all know in there knower that what God can do. Do you have them as your mighty men or do you suffer companion of fools? It is your choice, choose God.

Prayer: Father, too often we surround ourselves with people who are weak and paper thin. The political world is full of them and our lives can be also if we don’t listen to you Lord. I pray the we surround ourselves with mighty men and women of God who are rockstars for you. I pray that you bring them into our lives oh Lord. Show us who to learn from Lord. I pray that we get rid of all the bad apples around us in Jesus name. I pray that you show us the ones to go to battle with today. In Jesus name, amen.
