8 Before the spies lay down for the night, she went up on the roof 9 and said to them, “I know that the Lord has given you this land and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you. 10 We have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea[a] for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed.[b] 11 When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below.
At the time I am writing this, a fresh new quarterback has graced the 40 acers of The University Of Texas in Austin. His name is Arch Manning. He was a great quarterback in high school and became a highly sought after college recruit for the entire nation. Any college would have loved to have him on their team, but UT was his choice. We have not seen very much of this up and coming young man, but what we have seen of him, if you are a UT fan, is very promising. Not only does he come with a pedigree of having two NFL hall of fame quarterbacks for uncles, he has proven his athletic abilities on the field. When he gets to be the starting quarterback, we are in for a show. I am looking forward to it.
Israel, was on the march. A slave nation in Egypt for over 400 years miraculously set free by the hand of God is going to make waves. Lets forget the 40 years they spent in the desert as punishment and look at them as years in waiting. Waiting to finally get to take the land the Lord had told them He has already given them. While in the desert this ragtag bunch of slaves defeated nations and mighty kings. Og was the king of the Amorites and he stood 14 feet tall. When you defeat a monster like that people notice. The scariest part of the Israelites is fact that they seem to be wandering and while wandering the hand of God was with them defeating all of their enemies and overcoming every obstacle in there way. They were like the tank brigades headed by Paton marching to Germany in WWII, nothing was stopping them, spreading fear like rain before them. Israel, no matter if they were slaves just 40 years ago, were very feared by everyone and no one was safe from the fear that spread like rain before them and Jericho was in their sites.
Rahab lived in Jericho on the wall and ran a prostitution house. You can guess she and her house guesses heard the rumors of this slave people coming out of Egypt. The men coming and going from all over must have spread the news in idle conversation wherever they went. So when the spies, sent from Joshua, arrived at her house of prostitution she instantly new why they there. Even the city officials heard of these spies arriving and come looking for them at Rahab’s place. She hides them and sends the men of a wild goose chase. Before they get some sleep she gives them her confession in the verses above. Rahab simply tells the men that the God of Israel is the one true God in heaven above and on the earth below. If Rahab was in church today we would call that getting saved, confessing your belief in Jesus and that He is God and died for your sins.
Rahab makes a deal with the spies to save her and her whole family. She lets them down the wall and she ties a scarlet cord in the window as the sign to save her and her family. It is one thing to hear of some army marching towards you, it is another thing to meet them before your city falls. You see the minute Arch Manning stepping on the 40 acres and put on that uniform every Texas fan was seeing National Championship. We will see. When Israel was marching towards Jericho the people were melting in fear. Rahab, for sure, was also afraid of this nation coming destroy Jericho. It was here confession in the one true God that saved her family and put her in the line of Davidic kings and ultimately to Jesus Christ that solidified her place in history.
The question for us today is have you committed your life to Christ? Is the fear of things around you making you go into defense mode shutting out others? Have your so called friends been pointing you in the wrong direction? You see when God moves nothing can stop it. Just like Jericho falling your own ways of handling life will ultimately fail and come crashing down. The walls you put are no match for the Lord. He can set you free from all of those things you have been hiding behind those walls. Rahab, before the battle started, made her claim for God and she and her family were saved. Today make a stand for Christ for your family. Don’t back down out of fear or intimidation. Walk by faith and not by sight. Christ is ready and is knocking on your door, are going to let him in?
Prayer: Father I pray today that we not back down out of fear. I pray that when you prompt us through the Holy Spirit to speak about you will stand up and make our confession boldly in Jesus name, amen.
