If Only I Knew…

Job 23: 3-5

If only I knew where to find him;
    if only I could go to his dwelling!
I would state my case before him
    and fill my mouth with arguments.
I would find out what he would answer me,
    and consider what he would say to me.

Some days it seems like the world is against you. The traffic is horrible. The family is in a huge fight. Your life takes a turn for worse and you stand at the feet of this bad day and think the world is against you. Sorry to say it but yes, the world is against you. Don’t be fooled into believing the great world we live in is powered by love and acceptance and good feelings like we just watched a Hallmark romance.

2 Corinthians 4:4 tells us, “in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God”. Satan is the god of this world and the Bible tells us that he the father of lies (John 8:44) and he only comes to steel, kill and destroy (John 10:10). Lets shine a light on those facts and stop believing in mother nature and good vibes from the earth. Satan has blinded the eyes of the unbelieving so they don’t see light of the gospel and glory of Christ.

Job is rebutting the arguments of one of his friends in the verses above. For Job, life is not so rosy. He has lost all of his family, possessions and is afflicted with all kinds of diseases courtesy of Satan, not God. His plea for an audience with God to argue his case is seen several times in Job (Job 9:33-35) and here. For us as Christians, we should recognize that those pleas from Job to have a mediator or an audience with God have been fulfilled in Jesus.

He died on the cross so that we could have fellowship with Him. He was the perfect sacrifice for the sins of the world. His blood shed on the cross paved the way for us to have that audience with the Father that Job was seeking. When the disciples were baptized in the Holy Spirit in Acts, God Spirit was given to us as believers so we could live a life walking by faith and not be sight believing that God is with us and never will forsake us. Our case as sinners was tried before the court and we were found guilty as charged condemned to an eternity apart from God. However, Jesus’ blood paid that price securing our citizenship in heaven.

For Job he says in verse 12 of the same chapter, “I have not departed from the commands of his lips; I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my daily bread.” This should be a wake up call for all of us. Do I have His words (the Bible) continually on my lips? Have I treasured the words (the Bible) of His mouth more than my daily bread? I believe all of us fall short of answering a resounding “yes” to these questions. We can and should start every day spending some time with the Father, praying and reading His word.

In verse 10, Job’s faith is displayed in His God, “But he knows the way that I take; when he tested me (past tense), I will come forth as gold.” Job was on the back side of Satan completely messing up his life. Even though life was at its worst and the world seemed like it was against Job, he knew that he would come forth from this time like gold. Do you have that assurance in your Father in heaven? When life is kicking your backside do you still keep your faith in the Lord and speak His words? Or do you descend into a place of blaming your circumstances on something or someone? Psalm 23 tells us ,”Even though I walk through the valley of shadow of death I will fear no evil for my God is with me.”

The world is a messed up place and bad things happen to good people. The world is against you but don’t worry Jesus tells us in John 16:33, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Rest in the Lord and the power of His might for He has overcome the world. Give it all to the Father.

Prayer: Father, too often we descend into a pit of despair rather than trusting you. Bad things may happen but I pray that your hand will be upon us to guide and to keep us from harm. I pray that our faith will not be shaken in middle of those times of testing. Just as Peter returned to you, I pray that we never stray and when we do I pray we come back to you. In Jesus name, amen.
