“Shall we indeed accept good from God and not accept adversity?”
In Texas, we have some hot summers and cold winters. We hear of families moving down here to avoid the cold winter up north and also families move up north to avoid the hot summers down here. These people seem to gravitate toward comfort.
Our understanding of God can be like the weather. We always have to endure it and bask in its pleasures as long as the temperature holds. Job asks his wife a question we should all ask ourselves, “should we only accept good from God and not the adversity?”
This question was asked after Satan was given permission to take Job’s health away. Satan’s claim was that Job would curse God after he is physically harmed. Job’s wife even said “curse God and die!” God knew Job and what he would do in the face of all this.
A short prayer that Job teaches us all is this, “God help me increase my relationship with you so strong that it rises above all adversity in my life.” We can all praise God when times are good, but when everything around us goes south is when we get a crash course of how well we know God. Are we going to trust him through it and praise him or curse him instead? No one ever wants adversity but we should accept it sometimes. Our relationship with God should be more important than our circumstance.
One of my most favorite verses is Proverbs 3:5-6, it reads, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” We are required to not lean on what we know and understand. Also we should submit to God in all of our ways which includes situations like what Job was in. In chapter 2 verse 3 God tells Satan about Job it reads, “There is no one earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil. And he still maintains his integrity though you incited me against him to ruin him without reason.”
We may not understand our current situation, but we can rest in a loving God that has his hand upon us and that we rest in shadow of him wings. Today, realize that you don’t have to understand the why, just submit to the Lord and trust him.
Prayer: Father, help us submit to you in all of our ways not holding back anything in Jesus name, amen.
