The Covenant

Isaiah 59: 20-21

“The Redeemer will come to Zion, to those in Jacob who repent of their sins,” declares the Lord

“As for me, this is my covenant with them, ” says the Lord. “My Spirit, who is on you, will not depart from you, and my words that I have put in your mouth will always be on your lips, on the lips of your children and on the lips of their descendants–from this time on and forever,” says the Lord.

I once had a car that kept breaking down.  Repair after repair, I began to loath that car.  It was not too long before I heard myself say, “What’s the use?  It’s only going to break again.”  So I would choose to drive that broken car until I really had to fix it.  I became really good at driving that hunk of junk.  Putting the car in neutral and revving the engine at stop lights because it would not idle.  Enduring a hot summer without AC because it kept breaking because what’s the use.

I think we all get to that point in our own lives.  The place where we say, “What’s the use?”  I know this habit is bad but I cannot see me ever actually breaking it so?  Or that relationship with someone that is not good for me but I cannot be alone so?  Those movies or TV shows with all that demonic stuff, I know they are not good, but entertainment is what I need now so?

Hello, if you are human then these feelings are common.  However, the word redeemer means to cover or atone for one’s sins.  To cover them up like they did not exist.  First, you have to get to the place where sin is not fun for you.  The Holy Spirit keeps nagging you and nagging you in the middle of the same thing that was fun before you chose to walk with Christ.  Cussing, watching demonic movies, those friends you know are a bad influence, that hangout place you used to spend a lot of time at, you know.  Sin is not fun any more, that is the Holy Spirit!  Don’t miss his gentle nudge.

Mike Warnke, an old Christian comedian, tells a story about a drunk man coming up to him and asking him if he has to quit drinking to be saved.  Mike says, No!  The drunk asks do I have to quit doing drugs to be saved?  Mike says, No!. The drunk man, really confused, says, “you mean I don’t have to quit drinking and doing drugs to be saved?”  Mike told the man, “Come to Jesus and He will clean you up when you couldn’t do it yourself.”

The Lord promises to put His words on your lips and those of your children and their descendants if you start by repenting from your sins.  That is all you have to do!  No special ceremony, no system of prayers, no confession to a priest, no beating yourself up, not even a self loathing spirit, nothing but, “here am I and I confess all that I have done against you God. Please help me.”  His covenant is with the ones who repent!  Have you truly repented or are you still hanging on to the last of those sins that have become no fun anymore?

Prayer: Help us to let it go! Let the bad habits go. Let the poor speech and rude humor go. Let the toxic friendships that drive us to sin go. Let it all go Lord. I give it all to you and I pledge to be your servant all the days of my life. I release my grip on all the things I am holding onto that are not of you Lord. Help me be humble before you giving you control in Jesus name, amen.
