Nearness of God

Isaiah 58:2

“….They delight in the nearness of God.”

I am a father of 5 girls, 4 of which we reared as infants.  Which means my wife and I spent about 10 straight years rearing very young girls.  It was like running a daycare you never got paid for.  Countless times I can remember when the girls got dropped off at the real daycare from church or school as young ones and someone did not want to leave the loving arms of mommy or daddy.  If an onlooker, who did not have any kids, were watching this whole thing play out it would look shocking and even cruel. To all the parents, who might be watching this unfold, they all would be like, “Jesus help that parent!”  Heck they might even come and help out.

We are labeled as children of God.  Some of us are very young and some of us have been walking with the Lord for years, maybe even decades.  To some of us, who cheer on our fellow saints, we dive right in their world and yet other times a more distant approach is needed.  Every time Tina or I would pull up and pick up our kids from school or church they would always run to the suburban like we have been away for years.

Walking with the Lord is a lot like these moments.  As infants in Christ we are close to His presence much of the time because we desire to read the Bible and go to church and discover our new faith in Christ.  As we all do, we grow up in our faith. We start spending less and less time diving into the Word of God and discovering what the other side has to offer.  We may even stray for a period of time.  Hopefully though, we all come back to the Lord.

Jesus says in Mathew 19:14, “but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.”  Yes, we need to be like the little ones in our walk of faith.  My kids always liked being around Tina and I as young girls.  They would eagerly wait until we got back from the store or work or a trip out of town.  They would delight in being near us.

The question today is, “Do you delight in the nearness of God”?  Has your walk been cold and far from the Lord?  Do you spend zero time reading the Bible?  When was the last time you prayed by yourself?  Truthfully speaking, as I write these devotionals I cannot wait to see what the Lord will show me.  It started with just writing something down, a prayer at first, and then some thoughts.  Before I know it I was writing what God was speaking to me.  I delight in the nearness of God in everything I do.

Prayer: Father, help us delight ourselves in you and your presence. Help us to seek out your presence like one seeks a lost precious item of great value, never stopping until we find it. I pray that the Lord will continually speak to me and I will continually be listening to the Holy Spirit all my days. In Jesus name, amen.
