Crying Out

Isaiah 46:7

“They lift it to their shoulders and carry it;
    they set it up in its place, and there it stands.
    From that spot it cannot move.
Even though someone cries out to it, it cannot answer;
    it cannot save them from their troubles.”

When the computer age first got started, everyone was on a steep learning curve when it came to computers.  For centuries, we were writing things down on tablets or paper.  Correction was erasing or using something like white-out.  Now, we are all suppose to use a keyboard to type everything in and use a mouse.  For most of us, it was difficult to navigate.  I still remember the cartoon that read, “Hit any key to continue.” and you see a man with a large hammer fixing to smash the computer.  We can all relate.  The truth is that no matter how frustrating the computer learning curve was, yelling at the computer and cursing at it was not going to do any good.

We often do the same thing in life.  Driving to work and yelling at others about there lack of driving skills.  Yelling at the help desk person when your problem cannot be solved.  Taking it out on yourself for a dumb move or comment.  Or, one of my favorites, “if only”.  Yep the dreaded “if only” phrase that comes before everything that ever goes wrong as if saying it might be healing to soul.

We even yell at God.  “WHY!!!” is a common phrase.  “Are you even listening?”  Opening up our mouths and letting our emotions out is not a bad thing but I do believe the bible points us to things we should not be pouring out our emotions to.

In the chapter 46 of Isaiah, God is revealing the human nature of the gods of Babylon.  They spend time fashioning it and molding it, making it look like beasts of burden and other objects and overlay them with gold.  Placing them on an alter and worshiping them.  Verse 7 tells us that they cry out to these idols and it never answers and the fact is they cannot save them from their troubles.

What have you been yelling and crying out to lately?  Do you find yourself, when life hits the fan, crying out to others, blaming others, saying “if only”?  The Lord promises to sustain you and carry you and rescue you.  God has a plan and it will not be delayed He says in verse 13.

Today, spend a little time reflecting on what you have been crying out to.  Do you spend your time rehashing life with a friend and gossiping?  Would you rather seek counsel from others than understanding what God says about it in His Word?  Emotions are God given and will be used all of the time but let us keep them under control. Strive towards understanding what the Lord says about our issues and stop crying out to things that “cannot save you from your troubles”.

Prayer: Father help us to realize you in every situation we find ourselves. Holy Spirit show us the idols we have put in our lives, those idols that we seem to hold up high and put way too much trust in. Cleanse me of all the filth that I have held on to when times of trouble come my way. I pray that the Holy Spirit will fill me with the Word of God and write it on the tablet of my heart. In Jesus name, amen.
