Meet Jesus Of Nazareth

Luke 23:46

“Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.”

Meet Jesus of Nazareth.  Carpenter by trade, son of God by design, and Savior of the world by choice.  Yes choice.  John 3:16 says that God so loved the world that he gave his only son, not forced, not obligated, not tricked into, not shamed into, but gave because He loves us.

The Lord alerted me to this verse above and I could not stop thinking about it.  Woke up at 3 am thinking about it.  Went back to bed and woke up again thinking about it.  It was stuck in my head.  Jesus of Nazareth, what a guy! Shows up and within 3 years changes the world, the world He spoke into existence by the way.

He walks on the streets of the Middle East 2000 years ago in a small place geographically and shakes the foundation of everything, everywhere for all time.  Let’s go over his resume.  Virgin birth foretold by an angel.  Identifies as a kid as being God’s son calling it ‘His father’s house’.  Gets baptized by John the Baptist and beats the devil after 40 days of no food or water.  Heals the sick, makes the blind see, cleanses the lepers, makes the lame walk to name a few.  Walks on water, calms the storm, making even his disciples wonder who this man is.  Has angels attend to Him, inspires people to have crazy faith so they could just touch the bottom of the robe and be healed.  Hand picks men to carry His message that no one would ever pick.  Uproots all of the known religious leaders.  Become the very creation he spoke into existence, a man.  This is Jesus of Nazareth.  The entire Bible is His resume.

Fast forward to the cross.  Yes, He is on the cross, put there by His very creation.  Only going there by His own free will.   Hanging there by choice. Not by some natural human cause and effect of torcher and pain, no, all free will.  He felt it all, he bleed in front of them all but the real choice, the reason for all this human tragedy is verse 46.  The same person who created us chose to die for us as the perfect sacrifice.  Make no mistake about it. Our creator chose to let his creation sacrifice Him so He could provide a way for them to be in heaven with Him forever.  Completely crazy and awesome at the same time.

Jesus did die a human death but His sacrifice was much more than that.  We are more than human bodies. We have a God ordained purpose for us being here, to tell as many as we can about Jesus, period.  He is everything you need, want, lack or even dream of.  When he said “it is finished” He was referring to the path to heaven he opened up.  Just like when you walk down the sidewalk and see someone turn on the “OPEN” sign, Jesus turned on the “OPEN” sign to heaven for all of us when he spoke those words in verse 46.  He committed His spirit, it was not taken, stolen, obligated, shamed, or even wished away.  It was freely committed!  After he said this, He breathed his last breathe closing the door on Satan and his rule forever.  Today, walk in victory, Jesus handed it to us 2000 years ago.

Prayer: Father, today I commit all my ways to you. Heaven is open and you stand with your arms open wide for us to come to you. Your Word even says that you go looking for us even when we sin. You leave the 99 and search for the one. Thank you Father for your love and mercy and grace for us in Jesus name, amen.
