“Whoever flees at the sound of terror will fall into a pit;..”
Last night we were watching a show then all of the sudden we heard Sophie scream, “An earwig!!!” As ugly as an earwig is, it is not harmful at all, kind of like most spiders. We tend to get startled by little insects very easily. Take for example watching someone try to swish a fly or bee away; our entire body gets involved in getting away from this little guy.
In our walk with Christ we can do the same thing. As soon as things get a little ugly we seem to use all our emotion, wit, and better judgment to fix or avoid the issue. Some even just turn and run. One time, an old boyfriend, long ago of one of my daughters, was over and we were all playing spoons. As soon as the game got down to wire and it was clear he was going to lose he simply jumped up and ran out of the house. Crazy right? That is what we do as Christians when things get tough sometimes. God is like, “Really?, Have I not set before you all you need to overcome?”
Isaiah is prophesying here and warns the ones who flee at the sound of terror will fall into a pit. The pit refers to a deeper issue you have created because you just chose to up and run instead of praying about it and standing firm on what the Bible says to do. Psalm 1:1 says, “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers.” You see, when we choose to flee at the sound of something in our lives going wrong, we become like those who walk in step with the wicked or sit in the company of mockers. Ephesians 6:12-14 tells us that our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces and to stand firm by putting on the full armor of God. When we run from our problems we are choosing to make them larger that the God we serve.
We are supposed to be grounded in Christ the rock of our salvation. Joshua 1:9 tells us to be strong in the Lord and be courageous because the Lord will be with us wherever we go. Joshua chose to stand on Word of Lord instead of running. He witnessed his entire generation be afraid of taking the promised land 40 years prior to this, he was not about to run away in fear now.
Today, understand that you are founded on the rock of Christ and He is with you during all your issues. The Bible says that he never leaves you nor forsakes you. Remember that person swishing away the bee. In doing that they disregard all their surroundings and sometimes trip over or fall down because they are not paying attention. Don’t be the person who focuses only on the issues but rather stand firm in the middle of them.
Prayer: Father, today strengthen my resolve and faith to stand firm in you during all of life’s issues. I pray that I stand on the promises of the Word of God and walk in the authority you have given your disciples. In Jesus name, amen.
