A Clear Picture

Isaiah 14:16-17

“Those you see you stare at you, they ponder your fate: “Is this the man who shook the earth and made kingdoms tremble, the man who made the world a wilderness, who overthrew its cities and would not let his captives go home?”

In one episode of SpongeBob, SpongeBob is in school next to large fish named Flats. SpongeBob introduces himself to Flats and Flats turns to him and says, “I’m going to kick your butt!” You see SpongeBob go from friendly little sponge to very scared little sponge. The episode goes on and SpongeBob finally has to face Flats. Flats rears back and punches SpongeBob. What happens next is just flat out funny, pun intended. Flats’ punches are nothing but a little tickle to SpongeBob. All of sudden Flats’ large bellows of fear fall to the ground. He may be large with a big mouth but his punches just tickle.

Hollywood has always created Satan to be large and scary, an adversary that cannot be matched. Evil is out there and in the movies it is coming for you and there is nothing you can do to stop it. I read a book by Bill O’Reilly called Killing the Witches. In the book, O’Reilly details out the tragic Salam witch trials. The Puritans have come over to America from Europe and, unfortunately, have brought the fear of Satan with them. Someone accuses someone of being a witch and the story grows from there. Soon a hysteria of people with a fear of witchcraft seem to accuse nearly everyone of some form of witchcraft from children to high ranking government officials. The book ends with a detailed account of the Amityville house where a man killed his entire family apparently under the control of Satan. A group of Catholic priest spend months trying to drive out the demon of a girl who lived in the house after the killings. You can read it for yourself, but it is clear even these priests had an unreal, larger-than-life view of Satan and his demons.

Isaiah spells it out rather plain for us, it says, “Is this the man who shook the earth…”. To start off with, Satan is no match for Jesus. Revelation 1:18 tells us, “I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.” Jesus, when he died on the cross and before he rose again, took the keys of hell and death back from Satan and He proclaims his victory in this verse. When we are saved we become born again in the Spirit. We don’t re-enter our mothers womb and be born again as Nicodemus asked Jesus. No, our spirit is reborn and we become filled with the Holy Ghost Spirit of God.

Luke 10:19 informs us that Jesus has “given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.” We have resurrection power from God on the inside of us because of Jesus. That is great news but sadly we still see Satan as a larger than life enemy we cannot conquer.

We have to start looking at Satan like Jesus did, defeated! He is a defeated enemy and Jesus has given us the power of hell and grave because he holds the keys and gave us that same power. When you get baptized in the Holy Spirit, you get to become an MMA fighter for God. You now use the amor of God and take back what the enemy stole because he has been defeated. The cross was enough as the song says. For too long we have been a mighty warrior for Christ with all the battle gear ready to fight but instead of fighting, we are hiding from Satan. Why? Because we listen to what we have been fed from worldly preachers and doctrines of demons that erase the power of God inside of us. They replace it with a pre-Old-Testament pleading manner of walking out our Christian life.

Are you still looking at Satan like he is a mighty being that can have dominion over your life? If you are a Christ follower, you have the power through the Holy Spirit to defeat Satan and stop letting him get in your head. 2 Corinthians 10:5 tells us, “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” The second you get a Satan filled thought, take it captive and rebuke it because it comes from Satan and it is trying to undo the promises of God in your life. Satan is not a 16 foot tall giant warrior that cannot be defeated. No, he is a tiny little imp that Jesus struck down when he rose from the dead. Walking in victory means understanding that Satan does control this world but with Christ inside of you you are more than an overcomer through Christ who strengthens you. (Romans 8: 31-39)

Today, walk in the understanding of who you are fighting (Eph 6:12) and that you hold the trump card and his name is Jesus. Don’t let Satan fool you into believing he is larger than Christ in your life. He is not! If we could pull back the facade of this world we would say the same thing that Isaiah prophesied, “Is this the man who shook the earth..”

Prayer: Father reveal to us the Holy Spirit power you have given us. I pray that we start defeating Satan with the power of Christ. Erase the “larger than life” picture of himself that Satan has fooled us with. In Jesus name, amen.
