“You said in your heart,
“I will ascend to the heavens;
I will raise my throne
above the stars of God”
They say your eyes are a window to your soul. Well, in “Bible speak”, what you say is a window to your heart. David was said to be man after God’s own heart. Jesus said, “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” (Matthew 12:24) It is clear that our hearts have a role to play in determining our speech. If David was a man after God’s own heart then he must have spoken things that God would speak and do things God would do to be labeled that way.
You can read the book of Psalms and see how David reacted in many situations. In short, it is a prayer journal from David to God. You can read Proverbs and see how the Lord fashioned Solomon’s heart with wisdom and knowledge. Here, Isaiah is prophesying how Satan fell. I have read this many times but never really caught the beginning. “You said in your heart…” Before Satan ever spoke anything, his heart had already spoken enough.
What is your heart saying? Considering that the Lord God Almighty knows everyone’s heart and can hear it plainly so you might want to ponder this before you answer. Actions in your life and what you speak out of your mouth are reflections of what has already been said in your heart. This is why God wants your heart, because it controls your speech, your actions, your thoughts, and much more. In fact Jesus himself says, “A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” (Luke 6:45)
Too many times we commit to give the Lord our addictions or our issues but we never seem to give Him our hearts. You see people giving the Lord their time, reading or praying for hours, but never seem to grow in their faith. You see people say if I go to church on a regular basis that will fix the issues and sadly enough they are disappointed when their issues just seem to never go away.
Today, pray to the Lord and tell Him that you give Him your heart. You give Him control of your heart. You commit to letting the Lord change your heart. You see, the Lord wants your heart because it controls the rest of your everything. The test is what is coming out of your mouth. Is it grace and truth or just bitter words and resentment laced with impatient rhetoric? Do the test today. You might just find some fixing that needs to be done.
Prayer: Father, today I give you all of my heart, mind, soul, and strength. I turn the keys over to you, fall to my knees, and lift my hands toward you. I pray that you create in my a clean heart that will praise your name for evermore. In Jesus name, amen.
