Isaiah’s Commission

Isaiah 6:3

 “And they were calling to one another:

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty;
    the whole earth is full of his glory.”

How would you like to be Pharaoh’s son or King Charles’s oldest son and heir to the thrown of England? How about the one being groomed by the CEO to take over the business? Whatever situation you find yourself in, there is a huge mantle that will placed upon your shoulders. Whether that be the next king, the next CEO, or the new dad or new mom; the next chapter in your life has not been written yet. One thing is for sure, the weight of the upcoming mantel is heavy even before you take it upon your shoulders.

When King Uzziah died he left a very prosperous Israel.  His reign was 52 years and he became king at the young age of 16.  Isaiah’s commission comes right after his death.  Isaiah says that he saw the Lord seated on the throne and the train of his robe filled the temple.  Aren’t you glad that we serve a God who is enough?  He does not need a team of counselors beside Him or a group of lawyers reminding Him of the Law.  No, His train fills the temple.  He is enough.

Isaiah heard the seraphim calling to one another, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.”  The whole earth is full of his glory.  Not just a part of it but the whole earth.  Have you looked around and noticed the glory of the Lord around you?  Your health, your family, your job, your blessings, your compassion for hurting people, your Godly justice in the law of the Lord?

Isaiah saw the Lord on His throne and said woe to me for I am a man of unclean lips and I live among a people of unclean lips.  The Seraphim flew down, had coal in his hand from the altar of the Lord, and touched Isaiah’s mouth.  He said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”  Are you happy we serve a God who can take away all our guilt and sin?  Have you met this God?

After the seraphim touched Isaiah’s mouth, then he heard from the Lord.  I don’t think this was out of order.  Isaiah first knew he saw the Lord.  Have you seen Him?  He next realized he was sinful and unclean.  The seraphim then touched his lips with a piece of coal from the altar.  Have you been touched by the Lord?  You would know it for sure.  Most importantly, Isaiah answered the call of the Lord and said, “Here I am, send me.”

We all have the same commission.  We are all called by the Almighty to spread His word to the lost.  Matthew 28:16-20 tells us, “Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go.  When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Don’t forget the process.  The Lord revealed himself to Isaiah, then Isaiah realized he needed to be cleansed.  After the Lord touched his mouth, his guilt was no more and his sin atoned for.  He then answered the call of the Lord.  Where are you in the process?  The Lord is waiting to touch your lips and send you out. Come to Him.

Prayer: Father as we busily go through our lives, help us stop and realize that commission you have given all believers. Help us to embrace the commission and eagerly go forth to spread the gospel of Christ. In Jesus name, amen.
