“The look on their faces testifies against them; they parade their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! They have brought disaster upon themselves. Tell the righteous it will be well with them, for they will enjoy the fruit of their deeds.”
When I was growing up, I used to watch a show called “The Little Rascals.” I am sure you have seen or heard of this iconic TV show about a group of young boys getting into trouble. It was a comedy in which the boys would find themselves in a pickle and do some zany things to get out of it. Spanky, the leader, would sometimes say to Buckwheat and the other boys, “Guilt is written all over your face!” They would then go to the mirror to look and see that the word “guilty” was never actually written on their face. so they would turn to each other and wonder what Spanky was talking about.
Unfortunately, we are sometimes also put in the same situation where the Lord God calls us out through the prompting of the Holy Spirit. We then look in the mirror and wonder what is God is talking about or how in the world the Holy Spirit find out. I have many stories of how the Holy Spirit would tell my mother about something I was going through that I never told her about. On one occasion, my mom’s great friend called and told her that she had been praying for me because the Holy Spirit prompted her. When my mom confronted me over the phone to ask what was up, I was shocked. Hours before this call, I had just broken up with my girlfriend and no one else knew about it, but the Lord did. For me, that was the start of me understanding just how cool the Holy Spirit was.
For the crowd who “parades their sin” the Lord says simply “Woe.” Yes “Woe” to those who parade their sin like they are walking down the red carpet of a fancy celebrity award show. The Bible says that they have brought disaster upon themselves. As Spanky would say, guilt is written all over their faces.
If you think about it, those who parade their sin don’t even realize it. They flash it around like some kind of new jewelry piece. They don’t even realize they are flashing around something that really stinks in the eyes of God. When Paul met Jesus on the road to Damascus he was radically changed. God opened his eyes so he could see the sin parade that he was a part of and who Jesus really was, the savior that the entire Old Testament was speaking about.
1 Corinthians 2:14 tells us, “The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.” Sin has a way of blinding you to the truth and the only way to remove those scales is through Jesus. I pray today that the Lord would do the same to all of us, remove the scales of sin and reveal the Holy Spirit to us.
In verse 10, the Lord tells us that the righteous will enjoy the fruit of their deeds. Enjoying it is something I want to be a part of. So today, ask the Lord to reveal any sin you have been parading around and to show you anyone else’s sin parade so you can avoid the traps set in their path.
Prayer: Father open our eyes to the sin parade we are in. Open our eyes and our ears to hear the Holy Spirit speaking to us. I pray that we shed the sin, the distractions, the short comings, and the poor judgment and run to you oh Lord. I pray all this in Jesus name, amen.
