“How is your beloved better than others, most beautiful women? How is your beloved better than others, that you so charge us?”
When I was kid, all my friends had favorites. From sports players, to cars, you name it. We would often find ourselves locked in a heated battle of whose favorite is better. We would defend our favorites against the other kids by comparing them. However, we would often never change our minds at all. Our minds were set that our favorite player was the GOAT or that our car was the fastest.
Without even knowing, we go into our defense of Christianity just by the way we live our lives. As a father, I have seen this play out in school, work, and in my personal life. Jim Spencer, a pastor I grew up with, always said, “You are the best Christian somebody knows.” Chilling, right? The fact that your life is playing out like a movie to someone else is kind of scary. If you have not been self conscious before, you might be now after hearing that. Yes, your faith in the Lord will be tested in the game of life and someone is watching.
We would all love for our faith to be kept in a closet so that no one could see our mistakes or our shortcomings but the truth is that someone is watching your life movie. They might as well be sitting down with popcorn and a Coke just waiting to see how you react to your personal issues and the issues of the world. You see, how you live your life is displaying something you believe. The real question is “What do you believe?”
If you read verses 10-16 of chapter 5 you get the impression that the Shulamite woman is completely smitten by her man and ready to defend him to her friends. Are you quick to defend the Lord to people in your life? Do you like portions of the Biblical truths but seem to ignore others? Do the hot button topics of today make you sweat because you hope no one will ask you how you feel? Just like the woman in this book knows every part of her man, do you know what the living Word of God says about Him?
As kids, we defended our heroes because we knew everything about them and could debate their heroic nature with other would-be heroes. God wants you to get to know Him and defend Him just as well as the woman knew her lover. Today, I encourage you to get to know the God of the universe by reading his diary; the Bible. Think about your testimony and build your case for following Christ.
Prayer: Father, every day we are playing out our lives with every decision we make and we know that they have an effect on those around us. From obeying the traffic laws, to that smile we give the waitress, it all matters. Help us to get to know you better Lord, so that your love will shine through us. In Jesus name, amen.
