“Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”
One evening my youngest, Sophie, and I watched King Kong vs Godzilla. It was a crazy plot that had us venturing down into the center of the earth and back to surface. At first King Kong and Godzilla hated each other but in the end, well, I won’t spoil it for those who want to watch it, but it had something to do with the value of two.
Solomon, in chapter 4, comes to analyze the value of more than one. Verse 8 says, “There was a man all alone; he had neither son nor brother. There was no end to his toil, yet his eyes were not content with his wealth. “For whom am I toiling,” he asked, “and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?” This too meaningless—a miserable business.” Two are better than one.
God said to himself that it is not good for man to be alone so he created Eve. Moses had Aarron, Abraham had Sarah, Jesus had the 12 disciples, even the apostle Paul had Barnabas and Luke with him, the list goes on and on. If you have not seen it in your own life, the value of two is straight from the Lord and with the precious understanding of this fact comes corruption from Satan. He comes ONLY to steal, kill, and destroy.
So with this, he seeks to corrupt the value of two. Proverbs is full of warnings of foolishness and it usually is done with, you guessed it, someone else. “One who walks with wise people will be wise, But a companion of fools will suffer harm.” (Proverbs 13:20) Even foolishness, with other foolish people, seems right but you will end up suffering harm. Verse 12 directs us to weave our lives around other strong like minded Christians. Why? Because a bond with those strong Christians is not easily broken, meaning you can depend upon the advice or wisdom from these people to keep you out of trouble and likewise keep someone else out of trouble.
Foster, engage, invest in relationships with Christian minded friends because you never know when your life will be tempted with foolishness. You are who your friends are and you become like the people you hang around. Why? You end up participating in whatever the friend group is doing.
Galatians 5:9 (AMP) says, “A little leaven [a slight inclination to error, or a few false teachers] leavens the whole batch [it perverts the concept of faith and misleads the church].” The Bible also calls it being unevenly yoked. In 2 Corinthians 6:14-15 Paul says, “Do not be unequally bound together with unbelievers [do not make mismatched alliances with them, inconsistent with your faith]. For what partnership can righteousness have with lawlessness? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony can there be between Christ and Belial (Satan)? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?”
Today, do a friendship audit. Ask the Lord to open your eyes to toxic friends and acquaintances and to help you get rid of them. The value of two or more strengthens your walk. The question is where is your walk going and who are you walking with?
Psalm 1:1 says, “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers,” Plants survive in good dirt, with good light, and with good watering, they need all three to survive and flourish. Any one by itself and the plant will die, it needs all three to grow. You need Christ in your life everyday and good Goldy friends to survive.
Prayer: Father you are our ultimate companion. Your Holy Spirit has taken residence in our hearts and we are the temple of the Lord God. I pray that we partner with Godly, like-minded Christians who can edify us and sharpen us in our daily walk. Help us to be open to Godly rebuke from these men and women, because they may see something we are blinded from. Help us to set our lives on the rock of Christ today and every day. In Jesus name, amen.
