Open Your Eyes

2 Kings 6 :16-17

“Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” Then Elisha prayed and said, “O Lord, I pray, open his eye that he may see.”  And the Lord opened the servants eyes, and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

This is one of the best stories of the Bible.  Elisha had just told the king of Israel the plans of the Arameans and the Bible tells us that the king of Aram was “enraged” (verse 11).  The king of Aram sends an army to kill Elisha in the dead of night and surrounds the city where Elisha was staying.  Elisha’s servant goes out early in the morning and sees this army and panics.  He runs to Elisha and tells him of the army and Elisha’s response comes in verses 16 and 17.  Elisha then prays and strikes the entire army with blindness and leads them away saving the city.

I often put myself in the place of the servant in this story.  I see a calamity before me in my life and go to panic mode just like Elisha’s servant.  From the natural, it seems like the right thing to do.  A army surrounding the city and hardship 101 knocking at my door. Yes, I go to panic mode.  I used to stay there and make decisions to take cover or run away from the decisions in front of me.  Again, from the natural, worldly side of things that is what you do.  The more grounded I become in Christ and study His Word, I began to open my spiritual eyes and see the army of God ready to fight my battles just like the song we sing at church.

Elisha prayed and asked God to open his servant’s eyes and he did.  When he opened them, he saw what Elisha saw and fear left.  God is bigger than anything in this world.  I often times pray that my eyes would be opened to see the Lord working.  I don’t get to see all the chariots of fire, but the Holy Spirit does reveal God’s hand on my life and fear goes away.

My daughter was in college and the stress was getting to her. The testing, assignments, and deadlines seem to have eaten away all of the resolve that she had left. She began to fear getting things done on time. Fearing she was not studying enough. She also feared that the work she was doing was not good enough. To top it all off, her roommates were adding to the worry and fear with their everyday issues that affected the entire dorm room.

She was on the verge of breaking down and if you talked to her on the phone, she sounded like she was there at the door. Momma and I were worried about her and her sisters were too. One weekend night she broke down, in a good way. The Holy Spirit told her to speak to the fear and command it to leave in Jesus name. She then wrote a letter to fear. That’s right a letter to “fear”. This letter was the demarcation line of her battle with fear. No longer was she going to fall under the pressure of fear any more. She wrote multiple pages and spoke it out loud. (2 Timothy 1:7) She proclaimed that fear has no hold on her any more. She was set free from fear.

Today, if you want fear to leave you have to rely on God.  His Word is full of truths and promises that drive fear away.  Put your name in verse 16 and personalize it.  Speak to the fear and command it leave because that is not from God. He stands at the door and knocks waiting for you to open.

Prayer: Father too often we succumb to fear. We let it get inside of us and give it control over our lives. We then see our decisions that are made in response to fear and begin to go into panic mode over something your Word tells us that we have been given the power over through Jesus. I pray that we speak to fear and everything Satan uses to torment us and command it to leave in Jesus name. Luke 10:19 tells us that we have been give authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome ALL the power of the enemy and nothing will harm you. Father, I pray that we stand on your Word and use the power we have been given. In Jesus name, amen.
