Rivers in the Desert

2 Kings 3:16

“and he said, “I will fill this valley with pools of water.”

We can all think of time when we started a fight. The boldness and bravado it took to it step we all remember. But what about the times when the fight comes to you? Out of the blue, you suddenly have to react and deal with the bully. Sometime the fight comes looking for you.

Joram was the son of Ahab, king of Israel. Joram is following in his father’s footsteps and doing evil in the sight of the Lord. Ahab and Israel were powerful and the king of Moab, Mesha, had a deal with Ahab to pay him tribute in order to not get attacked. When Ahab died, Mesha was going to turn the tables and fight against Israel and Joram. This caused Joram to gather all of Israel’s forces and team up with Jehoshaphat king of Judah. They go on a seven day march through the desert and found themselves without water for the army and their animals. The Bible does not tell us why they ran out of water, just that they were in a desert far from home and the king of Moab is ready to fight. Israel was between a rock and hard place so to speak. They faced losing the battle for sure if they did not get the necessary provisions, but they are in a desert far from any supply.

Now Jehoshaphat was a Godly king of Judah and he says in verse 11, “Is there no prophet of the Lord here, through whom we may inquire of the Lord?” An officer of Joram’s army tells them about Elisha and that he is not far away. Jehoshaphat knows that God is with this man and they go to see him. At first Elisha is reluctant to even talk to Joram, but because Jehoshaphat is with them he inquires of the Lord about their situation. Now that a real prophet of God was there they are about to hear the Lord.

The Lord tells Elisha, “I will fill this valley with pools of water. For this is what the Lord says: You will see neither wind nor rain, yet this valley will be filled with water, and you, your cattle and your other animals will drink. This is an easy thing in the eyes of the Lord, he will deliver you from Moab.” The next morning, the valley was filled with water overflowing from the direction of Edom. The sun was shining on the water the next morning and to the Moabites it looked like blood. They thought the kings had fought against one another and so they attacked and Israel won the battle.

Sometimes the fight comes to you and you have to be prepared. The Bible calls all of us to put on our spiritual armor found in Ephesians 6. It tells us that we war not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces in the heavenly realm (Ephesians 6:12). We are called to fight and the Bible tells us to fight these spiritual battles with the Holy Spirit and the authority given to us by God. You see, the desert we see with our own eyes may look daunting and bleak showing us defeat, but we serve a God who can fill that desert with water because it is an easy thing for Him. Today, believe the Lord is with you wherever you go and He will supply all you need for the day of battle. (Philippians 4:19)

Prayer: Father, even though we see the desert before us dry and parched, we know you can fill it up with the very thing we need to win the battle. I pray that today we step out in faith and fight as if we already have won the battle because Jesus paid for it all when he died on the cross and rose again. He has the keys of death, hell and the grave and He has given us the power to charge hell knowing we are victorious. Help us to fight and see the enemy as a defeated foe and for us to walk in victory. In Jesus name, amen.
