“It was not through the law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise that he would be heir of the world, but through the righteousness that comes by faith. For if those who depend on the law are heirs, faith means nothing and the promise is worthless, because the law brings wrath. And where there is no law there is no transgression.”
I always say work smarter not harder. It is even more true as I have gotten older. I cannot muscle through things with ignorance like I used to do. I must have the right tool for the right job and take more time to study the process. For example, if your whole goal is take the tire off the car and you start using a regular wrench, you might get the tire off eventually, but you will be frustrated and tired. What if I told you there was an impact driver that you could use take the tire off in a matter of minutes with little effort? The impact driver does all the work.
In our crazy world, we have seen the vast majority of us do the same thing. We watch as our elected officials do good things and not so good things. We watch the news as they regurgitate the happenings of the day with opinion pieces and pundits. If we are not careful, we get caught up into the whirlwind of all of this and sound just like the newscasters in our casual conversations.
While keeping track of current events is a good thing, we must guard ourselves from digesting so much of it that it starts to take over our lives. Just like a fever is a symptom of being sick, if you look around and find all your friends sound like the news, it might be a symptom of your inner circle paying too much attention to news.
Why say all this? Well, Paul tells us in our verse that those who depend upon the law are heirs of it, faith means nothing, and the promise of Jesus is worthless. Some people end up putting all of their faith in elected officials and the laws that they forget about our faith in God. I believe we need to stay on top of current events and educate ourselves on all issues, but there is a point where we can go too far. We ought to have our lives grounded in faith in the Lord Jesus and not in the law.
The crazy truth about the law is that it brings wrath. Without faith in God, the law was something the Israelites could not keep and thus reverted to following other gods after getting frustrated. The law was and still is pointing to the perfect sacrifice for sins, Jesus.
Today, make a pact with yourself and family that faith in Christ will be at the top of your list and you will decide to walk by faith and not by sight. Without the law, there is no transgression, so we need the law, but we cannot put our faith in it. Yes, we still need to pray for our elected officials and those in leadership positions because they are there for a reason. (Romans 13:1) But remember that we are citizens of heaven and heirs of Christ. He calls us His children. That means He is our Father and the one who advocates for us. Stop doing all of the work yourself by muscling your way through life. Put your faith in Christ and you will see God work in supernatural ways.
Prayer: Father, help us walk by faith and not by sight. As we watch the elected officials of our country promote lawlessness, I pray that we would keep our eyes on you Lord. If you have put the authorities in place, then you have a plan and we are called to walk by faith knowing that we are protected by your angels and covered by the blood of Jesus. We declare our trust and faith in you Jesus today, and forevermore. In Jesus name we pray, amen.
