“I am telling the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience testifies with me [enlightened and prompted] by the Holy Spirit,”
When I was kid you could often find me running all over the place outside. Riding bikes, Riding horses, playing, working; outside away from the house. When dinner was ready, my mom would yell out and say, “dinner is ready!” Like a beacon of light from the lighthouse, her voice pierced the noises all around us and after we heard her call for dinner, we came running.
It is not too often we hear the phrase “God spoke to me” today. In the Old Testament, we read about the Lord speaking to Abraham, Moses, the prophets, and many more. Before Christ died on the cross, God spoke through the prophets or his chosen person. Today, after Christ died on the cross, He sent the Holy Spirit to fill the hearts and minds of men and women across the world. Jesus said that when He goes, He will send back someone to guide us that we would do greater works than we read about in the Bible. His name is the Holy Spirit. If you have accepted Christ as your personal savior then you are not your own. The Bible says you belong to God and the Holy Spirit lives inside of you.
Now that we have some ground truth applied, how does the Holy Spirit speak to us? A great question and that question is answered one way by our verse. Paul says that his conscience testifies with him. What is he telling us? If you are a follower of Jesus Christ then the Holy Spirit becomes the better judgment voice. The still small voice inside that testifies with the Word of God. Just like mom calling for dinner that could hear that above all else, the Holy Spirit wants to guide us and direct us into all righteousness. He also wants to be heard above all else.
How do we hear Him? That begins with you getting into the Word of God every day. Jesus said that we would know the truth and the truth would set us free. That truth begins with reading God’s playbook, His life outline, His rule book, His life guide every day. It is called the living word of God because through it God speaks to the heart and the Holy Spirit testifies with it as truth. It is up to us to walk it out.
We got really good at hearing mom calling us. Those times we missed dinner was because we did not hear her and she left us a cold plate of leftovers. If you miss the guidance of the Holy Spirit, you might just have to settle for the cold plate of leftovers, not exactly something to look forward to. God wants us to listen and obey the Holy Spirit so we can be guided in all righteousness. Without His guidance we are sure to step in all kinds of poo the world lays at our feet.
Today, pray to God and ask the Holy Spirit to become the voice of guidance for you and your life. I never wanted to miss dinner, I only missed it because I was not listening. How many blessings are you missing because you are not listening?
Prayer: Father I pray that our ear would be inclined to hear the Holy Spirit. Help us listen to the still small voice of your Holy Spirit as I remove all the noises in my life that would seek to crowd yours out. My desire is to hear you better and to walk the walk of faith. In Jesus name, amen.
