“So He said, “Go forth and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord was passing by! And a great and strong wind was rending the mountains and breaking in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of a gentle blowing.”
We watched an episode of “Little House on the Prairie” the other day. In this episode, Laura and her husband are going through some bad times. Her husband has a stroke and becomes depressed. Her husband’s sister becomes a controlling dictator and starts to run their life. Laura has new baby in the middle of all this. She is forced to see that her husband cannot walk, his sister is forcing them to move to Minneapolis against Laura’s will, and to top it off, a tornado comes and demolishes their house. It is not until Charles Ingall, Laura’s dad and the star of show, wheels the young husband out to the demolished house when things take a turn. There he sees a geranium growing among the demolished house. A sign of life among the rubble. He makes a vow to walk again and rest is history.
Elijah was on the run from Jezebel, queen of Israel, for killing all of the prophets of Baal. After he killed all 400 prophets of Baal, King Ahab told Jezebel all that had happened. Verse 3 tells us that Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. Elijah ran for 40 days and finally ended up in a cave at the mountain of God in Horeb. Hiding in the cave, the Lord spoke to Elijah asking him what was he doing there (verse 9). Elijah was in a cave seeking to die and the Lord spoke to him telling him to go the opening on the cave because the Lord was passing by. When he got there a strong wind came, but the Lord was not in the wind, and then an earthquake came, but the Lord was not in the earthquake, fire then came but the Lord was not in the fire. After all that a sound of a gentle whisper came and the Lord then spoke to Elijah.
Elijah had to wait for the gentle whisper in order to hear the Lord speak to him. Life can put you on the run and throw some really nasty things your way such as bad days, bad bosses, bad food, or even death threats from some unseen virus. In the middle of the issues in your life, you may be wondering where God is. However, the strong winds will come but the Lord will not be in the strong wind. Earthquakes can shake you up but the Lord will not be in the quake. Fire can damage everything around you but the Lord will not be in fire. The sound of a gentle whisper, a peaceful breeze will come and that is where you will find the Lord.
Sometimes you have to get through the strong wind, earthquakes, and fire before you get a Word from the Lord. Today, persevere through all things knowing that the Father has put all things under His feet and given us victory in Christ. Even though you may have ended up in a cave hiding from all of your problems, God is still calling you out to join Him. You are never too far from God that He will not go and find you. He leaves the ninety nine to go find the one lost sheep.
Prayer: Father, life can get us distracted. With all the crazy news and issues we go through we can find ourselves asking where you are. Help us find the gentle whisper of your Word in the middle of the storms. Give us strength to withstand all the crazy things Satan throws at us. We stand firm with the armor of God and walk victoriously knowing you are with us Lord. Help us to not get sidetracked by paying too much attention to the world but rather keep us focused on you. In Jesus name, amen.
