“For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.’”
When I was kid, we used to go hunting with my dad. It was a great time and we made a ton of memories when we would show up to the deer lease to hunt. One day, it was the first time for my brother and I to go but my dad had already been there before. We got up way before sunrise and headed to the deer blind. It was pitch black and I could not see a thing except for what the flashlight was illuminating. If you turned off the flashlight, I would be completely lost in the total blackness of night. My dad on the other hand, knew where he was going, even in the dark. Sure enough, we walked to the blind before the sun came up and had a great hunt. Even though we did not know where we were going and could not see anything at all, my dad knew where to go. He had a different perspective and was able to see what I couldn’t.
Elijah had been moving from place to place after he said it would not rain until he said so. (verse 1) First, Elijah is directed by God to go to the Jordan river where he can drink the water and ravens would bring him food. When the river dried up, the Lord told him to go to Zarephath where a widow would feed him. He met the widow and asked for a drink of water and some food. The story then shifts to the widow and her plight. We learn of her status and that she had just enough to fix one more meal before she dies.
You can feel the push back as she explains things to Elijah. Elijah, seeing with spiritual eyes, says to the widow, “don’t be afraid..” (verse 13) Elijah then told her to go home, fix a loaf of bread for him first, and then fix something for her and her son. This is where our verse begins and you have to see it through spiritual eyes like Elijah to understand it. He had just been fed by ravens and he was sure the Lord could feed him at the widows house as well. He did not see the lack of food naturally, but he knew the Lord could provide supernaturally. Sure enough, the oil and flour the widow used to make the bread for Elijah did not run out until the rain came. It was a supernatural filling and a miracle from the Lord.
Some time later, Elijah returned the widow’s house and he found her son really sick and he died shortly afterward. Elijah then prayed to the Lord asking Him to bring the boy back to life. Miraculously, the lord raised him back from the dead and Elijah presented him, alive, to his mother. It was another supernatural miracle. The end of chapter is the widow exclaiming that she knows Elijah is a man of God and “the word of the Lord from your mouth is the truth.”
What are you seeing in your life? Is it a lack of money, time, food, friends, or faith? We all get into the widow’s mindset every now and again. Sometimes all we see is what we don’t have. We don’t have enough food, enough money, enough friends, enough faith, or enough resources to do what we need to do. We are seeing in the natural what we have before us. Elijah also saw what was in the natural, but he was also walking with the Lord long enough to see that the Lord was capable of providing for him wherever he went.
Philippians 4:19 says, “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” What the verse does not say is that you will see the provision in the natural before it comes, we have to have faith to see in the supernatural and trust in the Lord. In Matthew 6:33 it tells us the formula to see this supernatural provision, it says “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
Are you seeking natural provision like the widow or are you seeking provision with supernatural eyes like Elijah? When we “seek first” His kingdom, the Lord tells us that He will provide the rest, just like He did for the widow and Elijah. Today, declare that you will see with spiritual eyes and that you will commit to seeking the Lord’s kingdom every minute of every day.
Prayer: Father, I pray that we will seek first your kingdom above worldly provision. Give us spiritual eyes to see, and spiritual ears to hear while we are here on this earth. We are on this earth but our citizenship is in heaven and we are sons and daughters of the most high God. You will provide for your children. Father, strengthen our faith so we can see your supernatural hand at work in all that we do. In Jesus name, amen.
