Seeking God in the Famine

2 Samuel 21:1

“During the reign of David, there was a famine for three successive years; so David sought the face of the Lord.”

We are not immune to hardships as Christians.  In Mathew 5:45 Jesus says “so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.” After watching the Jeremy Camp movie and hearing a testimony last night on CBN, it occurred to me that hardship, (or rain like in verse 45), should not shake us.  Satan uses these times of uncertainty to cloud our peaceful skies and block out the peace of God that surpasses our understanding.  In the movie, each person prayed for faith and the power to get through the tough time so it would be used as a testimony show off what Jesus did for us all.

In today’s verse, a famine was in the land for three years.  David recognized who the Lord was and how it all worked.  He did not consult anyone else, he simply sought the face of the Lord.  We are not told if David was frustrated, concerned about provisions for Israel, or why it took three years, but we are told that when David sought the Lord; the Lord answered his prayer.  The Lord then told David how to end this famine. David carried out what the Lord told him to do and the famine ended.

How long will your circumstance determine your attitude and your peace? In John 14:27 Jesus tells us ” Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. ”  Be aware that Jesus gives us the peace from heaven and that peace will help us ride out whatever this world rains on us.  Today, do not stand on the peace that the world gives, you nor let your hearts be troubled. God will come through in His timing. Our job is to trust and stand on the peace of God through the storm.

Prayer: Father, today we seek your peace. Help us stand on your promises and walk by faith and not by sight.  Write your perfect peace on the tablet of our hearts.  Help us also remember who we are in Christ. We are more than overcomers through Him who saved us and we stand on this promise today. I declare that there is no circumstance that will choke out the peace of Christ in our lives. In Jesus name, amen.
