Stumbling Oxen

2 Samuel 6:6

“When they reached the threshing floor of Nakon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of ark of God, because the oxen stumbled.”

One day, I was having fun, riding my mountain bike in nature and all was good.  As my ride progressed, I started to notice my gears were not shifting properly and it was skipping gears.  The rear derailleur on a bike is a finely tuned thing; just millimeters of movement could throw off the shifting. When the shifting became even worse, I had to stop and investigate what was going on.  None of the derailleur bolts were loose and it did not seem bent at all. I was finding nothing wrong when my hand noticed the lever that is used to tighten the tire onto the frame was in a different position.

After careful inspection, I noticed that the lever had been unscrewed and loosened to the point that my rear tire was almost ready to come off.  How this happened I did not know. I tightened the lever and the shifting issues went away.  Problem fixed.

David had ordered the ark to be moved to Jerusalem and it was being held up by oxen.  When one of the oxen stumbled, Uzzah reached out and took a hold of the ark to stop it from falling. The Bible says that the Lord struck Uzzah down for his irreverent act.  This seems really harsh but let me point one thing that was going on, the ark was never supposed to be carried by oxen.  It was supposed to be carried by men not beast.  Sometimes we start out with a great idea and go full gas into what we think is the next step, only to realize we did not prepare properly.  Moving the ark was a good idea, but the way it was being moved violated God’s way of moving it and Uzzah paid the price. Why? Because he was a priest that should have known the proper way to move it.  After that, even David was scared of the ark and anger of God.

However, David learned his lesson. The Bible tells us that he moved the ark of the Lord to Obed-Edom’s house. While the ark was there, Obed-Edom’s house was blessed. Can I just say that when we keep the Lord close to our hearts we are blessed in everything we do. David, seeing this blessing on the house of Obed-Edom, moved the ark of the Lord to Jerusalem. This time verse 13 tells us, that David had the ark carried by men the way it was supposed to be carried.

Today, you might be facing some hard decisions to make.  Be careful to prepare properly before you go full gas into it. Stop, pray, and ask the Holy Spirit to give you guidance in everything you do. If I would have never stopped to investigate my rear tire, I could have crashed and been seriously injured. Psalms 119:105 says “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”  Sometimes you can’t see the path ahead and you stumble when you take the next step because there is no lamp at your feet. Don’t just charge out on the path before you have the next few steps carefully planned out. The result of following the Word of God is peace, favor, and wisdom with every small step.

Prayer: Father, we are an impulsive creation. We seem to want things now and lose our patience if we don’t get it. Today, I pray that we will remember to stop and pray before every situation. If your Word tells us that you care for the sparrows then how much more are you interested in the details of our lives. Help us to not to bull nose ahead without proper reflection and wisdom. We ask for the wisdom of the Lord to guide us into perfect peace with every step, decision, and thought. You are our lamp to our feet as well as the light on our path. In Jesus name, amen.
