“So I stood beside him and killed him,”

“Are you telling the truth?” This question was given countless times to my girls when they were young and we wanted to teach them not to lie. How do you do this? Well, first, we had to catch them in a lie. Second, we would explain why we shouldn’t lie and the reasons to tell the truth. I can say that it was a hard battle to get that to sink in. Other times, we would catch them scheming together to cover up a lie and that cover up was a lie as well. We would tell them, “The truth is always the best policy.” and that Proverbs 6:17 tells us, “a lying tongue” is one of the seven deadly sins.
Here we find an Amalekite telling king David that he killed Saul after Saul’s own sword couldn’t finish the job. The Amalekite took Saul’s crown and bracelet and brought it to David. After finding out, David commanded that his men kill the Amalekite for killing the “Lord’s anointed.” Rather than go through the whole story, which is very cool, I found an article above that explains it all. Bottom line is that this Amalekite told a flat out lie. David knew because he had to deal with lying lips every day on the run from Saul for the past 15 years of his life. This made David a very good judge of character.
The lesson here is to be careful who you believe is telling the truth. The Amalekite lied to David so that he could get the glory for killing Saul to gain a personal reward. But David sniffed it out quickly and had him killed. David could have easily given in, believed him, and spared the man’s life but David did the right thing.
The Bible says in Proverbs 12:22 that “The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy.” There are some people whose goal is to mislead us and get us off the path the Lord has for us. That is why we must always be careful and use the power of the Holy Spirit to guide us to what is true. We do this by surrounding ourselves with wise counsel and fighting the lies in our mind with the Word of God.
Prayer: Father, your Word says in John 14:6 that you are the way, the truth, and the life. When the world is filled with so many advertisements, sales tactics, and lies, give us the discernment to see what is true and what is fake. Help us stand strong and cut out any relationships where gossip is present. Let us speak only what is true, encouraging, and what lifts up others. Instead of lying lips, we ask that you would send Godly influences and friendships into in our lives who will speak the truth in love to help us become the best versions of ourselves. We want to be more like you Jesus. In Jesus name we pray, amen.
