Finding Strength in the Lord

1 Samuel 30:6

“David was greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning him; each one was bitter in spirit because of his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the Lord his God.”

Many times I find myself following google maps to some place I have never seen before.  I am following the map because I trust that the map is right.  Along the way, because I have never been there before, I do not recognize any land marks or roads. In due time we end up at the right spot safe and sound because the map was correct.

David and his men along with their family’s have been staying at place called Ziklag.  While David and his men were returning to Ziklag after fighting, the Amalekites raided Ziklag, burned it to the ground and took all the women and children as slaves.  David comes upon this awful sight and his heart, along with all his men, were broken.  The men even talked of stoning David because of the grief they felt that day.  Verse 6 says “But David found strength in the Lord his God.”  He then calls Abiathar the priest to inquire of Lord about pursuing the Amalekites. He gets the go ahead from God.  So they set out and find an Egyptian slave in the field.  It turns out that this boy was a servant of the Amalekites.  They feed him and care for him and in return he will lead David and his men to where the Amalekites are camped.

Just like following google maps, David and his men were given a travel guide.  Now a few God things happen in the story.

1. The Egyptian slave gets sick and is left for dead in a field.

2. David’s men find this boy and he becomes a modern day google map to the enemy.

3. David finds strength in the Lord.

This Egyptian slave is an great example of the Holy Spirit because God put him there to lead David to the enemy. The Bible says that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and that He lives inside it. Often times we don’t even recognize this great source that we have. When Jesus was walking on this earth, He was a perfect example of walking by faith and letting the Holy Spirit guide him. Jesus says many times that he can only do the will of his Father. That should be our morning prayer every morning. Are you asking the Lord to guide before you start your day or are you a crisis christian? The one who only prays out of desperation when things are going south. Yes, David and is men were upset, but David chose to seek the Lord before he let his emotions get out of control.

David’s journey to get back all the women and children started with him finding strength in the Lord.  The God things came after his commitment to the Lord.  I can only imagine what would have happened if David did not find strength in the Lord, he probably would be dead by stoning. Today, if nothing else, close your eyes and pray that God will give you strength in Him and nothing else.  Proverbs 3:6 says “In all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Prayer: Father, often times we choose to only pray when things get really bad. I know you are never going to leave us or forsake us so I pray that we would recognize you all day long in every circumstance. I pray that the Holy Spirit will quicken our minds to remember that you are here with us and that we are more than conquerors through Christ who strengthens us. Let us not forget that the battle is the Lord’s and help us fight on our knees praying and fighting with the Word of God. Burn them onto our hearts for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. Let us proclaim and stand on the promises of your Word oh Lord in Jesus Name. Amen.
