“He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, or lay my hand on him; for he is the anointed of the Lord.”
We have all watched movies and tv shows about gang life across the big cities and even a bad bunch of outlaws in the old west. Billy the kid was a member of a gang that was deputized to bring to justice men who murdered a wealthy land owner Billy the kid was working for. That group was called the Regulators. Although this group was deputized as lawmen for a short time, they went around on a killing spree putting to justice men the old west way. Their lawmen status was quickly revoked when the sheriff that deputized them was murdered. Billy the kid was a wanted man and would soon meet Pat Garrett in room at night. Pat Garrett would then shoot Billy the kid in the dark.
David was also in a gang on the run from Saul. The only thing David was guilty of was being anointed king by Samuel the prophet. Saul hated David enough to go in search for him for many years and seek to kill him. Saul goes in to relieve himself in a cave and funny enough, David and his men are also hiding from Saul in the very same cave! David has a chance to kill Saul and end the chase for good.
I cannot count how many times I have given into peer pressure and how it got me into trouble. Under pressure from his men, David is told to kill Saul but he refuses to take matters into his own hands. He instead chooses to let God handle it instead. As Saul is walking out of the cave, David calls to Saul and reveals the fact the could have killed him by cutting a piece of his coat off.
You may be in a position right now that now you are wrestling with. Even though the cave was where God had led David, he still had a choice to give it to God or handle things on his own. Saul walked away that day and recognizes that David will be king. At least for the time being, the running was over. David, against his 600 men, chose to follow God’s law that day. This would not be the only time David is faced with going against God but here he chooses to let God handle it.
A lesson we will always have to learn in life is the balance of letting God handle it or taking matters into our own hands. What are you still holding onto that is still not worked out yet? Are you giving into peer pressure which is taunting you to do the wrong thing? Are your close friends saying just do it? Titus 3:5 tells us, “he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit.”
Jesus is telling us to get out of the way and give it to God. If you have struggled with your pain way too long trying to get through it, step out of the way and let His mercy wash away your sins. By faith, He will give you a new birth and a new life through the power of the Holy Spirit. Today pray this prayer.
Prayer: Father, give me the strength to listen to your Holy Spirit and the courage to follow your direction. Keep my eyes on the things above and not on the easy way out presented by Satan. Give me strength to do, courage to go, and faith to see despite what the crowd is saying. Amen.
