“David stayed in the wilderness strongholds and in the hills of the Desert of Ziph. Day after day Saul searched for him, but God did not give David into his hands.”
Playing hide and seek as a kid was really fun. We even had a lot of fun playing it as adults. I know you remember it. However, one thing that made the game not so fun is when one of your “co-hiders” was caught first and gave up your location. When the seeker came directly over to your spot you thought, “man it is like someone gave me up.” Sure enough they did, game over for you.
David and Saul were playing this game but if Saul found David, it was really game over. Like dead 6 feet under pushing up daises over. Saul had spies everywhere so keeping track of David was not difficult. The difficult part was the that David was crafty and avoided Saul many times. For example, when David was on one side of the mountain and Saul was on the other. With all respects to the game of hide and go seek, Saul was cheating something major and it kept David on his toes for sure. Verse 14 tells us that God did not give David into Saul’s hands.
You might be running like David. You might be trying to hide from your troubles. You might even be running from away from a friend, co-worker, or someone causing problems in your life. As David kept running, God was keeping Saul just out of reach. Today, troubles and sin may be breathing down your neck, but remember that the Lord is right there with you. The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 10:13 “You have never been tempted to sin in any different way than other people. God is faithful. He will not allow you to be tempted more than you can take. But when you are tempted, He will make a way for you to keep from falling into sin. ”
Following God means understanding that you can keep from falling into sin and avoid destruction if you will lean on God and His Word. Even though it doesn’t always feel like it, following His ways will ultimately give you perfect peace and freedom in the end.
Prayer: Father, open our eyes so we can see like Elisha’s servant, the army of God that is on our side. Help us to recognize sin as it crouches near our door and deliver us from the forces of evil that try to kill, steal, and destroy our lives. Give us discernment to recognize when people or situations are leading us astray and give us the strength to rely on your Word over our feelings. Amen.
A famous country artist sings this line in a cool song:
“If you’re goin’ through hell keep on going
Don’t slow down if you’re scared don’t show it
You might get out before the devil even knows you’re there
Keep moving and don’t slow down!”
