“When David had fled and made his escape, he went to Samuel at Ramah and told him all that Saul had done to him.”
I remember playing a game as a kid of hide and go seek. The concept was simple, someone was to close their eyes, count to 20, and all of us would hide. After the count down ended, the person who had just done the counting would try to find all of us hiding before we made it back to base. Once we were on base we were safe.
David was now in the palace and married to Saul’s daughter. After Saul tried to kill David twice, we find David fleeing in the middle the night out of a window just to get away from Saul and his men. David runs to, you guessed it, Samuel, the prophet of the Lord. He stays with Samuel and while he is there, word gets out that David was with staying at Naioth were Samuel is. Saul then sends more of his people to kill David.
When the men reach the house of Samuel, something crazy happens. All of the men, instead of killing David, they start prophesying instead. Saul sends another group of men to Samuel’s house and they do the same thing. Well, you know what they say, if you want something done right you have to do it yourself. Saul travels to Samuel’s house and before he gets there he starts prophesying and even strips off his garments and the Bible says he was on the ground naked prophesying.
Crazy story, I know! Samuel represents the Lord and His covering over His people. The Lord had put a spiritual barrier around Samuel. David was being protected from all the men trying to kill him while he was under this spiritual protection.
The Bible does not promise that we will never encounter hardship or troubling times, but it does give us a safe place to go while we under attack. Ask yourself this question, “When my life seems out of control and I have no clear cut path forward what do I do?” David went to the man of God and he was protected from further harm. If he would have stayed at his house and took matters into his own hands he might have been killed by Saul’s men.
One of the promises of God is peace. Isaiah 26:3 says “You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You.” Where is your mind today? Is is focused on the issue or is your mind “stayed” on the Lord?
Prayer: Father, let our minds be stayed on you. Remind us to read your Word so we can know your promises and stand on them. I receive your perfect peace today and refuse to focus of the issue in my life but I rather lean on your promises. In Luke 22:32 it tells us that Jesus prayed that Peter’s faith may not fail. We pray that over the body of Christ today in Jesus Name. And just as Jesus told Peter that he would return and strengthen the brethren we also, right now, we pray that the men and women of God be strengthened in your presence. Amen.
