“I cannot go in these,”
I can remember as a young boy being made to dress up in a suit and tie for special occasions. Not only did I hate wearing a suit because it was really uncomfortable, but I was not at all used to wearing it. I kept pulling on the collar and adjusting my jacket and necktie the whole time. Afterwards, I could not wait to get it off and dress into my normal clothes; jeans, t-shirt and boots/shoes. Dressing up is required at some occasions and I learned that as I got older and I got more comfortable wearing a suit. Even to this day, I still don’t like wearing it. It may look good, but comfort always wins in the clothes department.
David had a similar situation happen to him. His father, Jesse, told him to bring some food to the battle scene, check on his brothers, and bring back a report of how things are going. If you can imagine an 16 year-old kid coming to front lines of a war and asking questions. Saul hears of this young man asking questions and summons him to his tent. David says he will fight the Philistine because the Lord has delivered him from the lion and bear and he will deliver him from this Goliath as well.
In a crazy gift of responsibility, Saul agrees to let David fight Goliath and puts all of his armor on him. David did the same thing I did wearing the suit, he said “I cannot go in these.” He then takes off all the armor Saul had given him and picks up five smooth stones along with his slingshot and marches out to fight Goliath.
There are going to be problems and issues that arise in your life, you cannot stop them from coming. We have the option of attacking them with what the world’s wisdom says, Saul’s armor, or the heavenly wisdom from the Bible, smooth stones and a slingshot. One option looks good and has all the protection and weapons we think we need. The other option is to use what God has given us, the thing we have been using to overcome battles in our past.
The very weapons, simple as they may be, are very effective when used with God’s hand upon them. Don’t get caught up in dressing for battle and using what everyone else thinks will win your battle. Get on your knees and use what God’s word says we will overcome with, our testimony and the blood of the Lamb. David told Saul that the Lord had delivered him from the lion and the bear. Maybe it is time to look back and reflect on what battles you have been delivered from and recognize that God was fighting for you. Pick up the Bible, read it and let it become the weapon that you use to overcome.
Prayer: Father, thank you for the powerful weapon I have in your Word. Life is full of problems and battles that I can’t face on my own. Just like David, I choose to fight these battles relying on your strength over what the world says I should do. I lay my life down, pick up my cross, and follow you today. Do what only you can do in and through me. In Jesus name, Amen.
