Worship

1 Samuel 16:23

“Whenever the spirit from God came on Saul, David would take up his lyre and play.  Then relief would come to Saul;  he would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him.”

A short one today.

Worship is a powerful thing.  Here we find David playing for Saul when he was tormented by an evil spirit and when David played, the evil spirit would leave Saul.  Simply put, worship clears out the tormenting spirits in our lives.  When I was a teenager I remember listening to music that would champion ungodly ways and find myself saying, “how can this be so bad?”  When David would worship and the evil spirits would leave, it seems to be true if we look at the opposite side of things. Sing and lift up ungodly behavior and you will invite evil spirits just like driving them away if you lift up the Lord.

Some day, I plan to do a study on worship in the Bible but until that day, realize that when we lift up the Lord in song, it touches our spirit and the tormenting spirits leave.  Psalm 100:4 says “Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.”  Both places in this verse tell us to that praising God in song is the gateway to getting close to him.  In Saul’s case, it was the only thing that he found that would drive away the tormenting spirits.

Today, as you are going about your day try listening to some Christian music. Pick out some of your favorite songs and sing them as a prayer to God in your car, in your office, in your mind, anywhere.  Let the Holy Spirit remove the torment of the day and all its yuck by getting close to God through praise.

Find your local K-love station and do a 30 day challenge by only listening to K-love for 30 days. Or you might want to just make a play list of your favorite Christian hits. You might even like the old gospel songs, the lyrics are great.

Prayer:Father, open our eyes to what praising your name does to our spirit. Let us see how powerful praising the Lord can be and how it can change our perspective on everyday life. Gospel music is not all organs and choirs Lord so guide us to the praise music that edifies our soul. Whether it be old church choir music or Christian rock and roll, let it sink deep in our hearts and lift you up in all things. I pray that the worship we listen to will open ourselves to your Holy Spirit as we listen and worship you. Finally Lord, I thank you for all the tormenting spirits leaving us in Jesus Name. I proclaim the peace that passes even our understanding as we lift you up and praise your name. Amen.
