The Recipe

Psalms 1:1-2

“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.”

I cannot cook very well. Over the years I have gleaned some skills from my wife and life as a single man. I have watched my wife cook some super good meals that I love to eat. The only thing is that I was the one watching her while she was cooking them. My thoughts are, “Thank God you are cooking this because I am lost!” She tells me that it is simple, just follow the recipe. Simple for her because she has already mastered cooking the dish. It was not until I started following some simple recipes that I started to become a better cook. Now, I am the dinner guy most nights, bless my wife for her patience. Seriously though, I have received some “great dinner” comments even from the Bobby Flay of our house and it all started when I simply began to follow the recipe.

Psalms is a collection of hymns written over many years by more that one author for the Israelites.  In Psalms 1 it is used as a preface to the rest of the collection.  If you ever wanted a definition of what blessed is then read the first two verses of Psalms 1.

Three action items are outlined here that we should not do concerning wickedness.  We should not walk in step with, stand in the way of, or sit in the company of sinners or the wicked.  Our delight and our meditation should be on the law of the Lord day and night.  You might find this very simple and it is.  Look at your friends, the people you walk, stand, and sit with. Do they delight in the law of the Lord or do they even think of what the Bible says about things?

The second half of Psalms 1 is a definition of the wicked people.  In short, they are driven by the winds of the day. These people you will not find among the Godly or good Christian friends.  They will spend most of the time with like-minded wicked people and when you come along they will most likely mock you until you succumb to walking in step with them.

The final verse in Psalms 1 is an outcome of these two types of people.  It says the Lord watches over the way of the righteous but the way of wicked leads to destruction.  Walk, stand, and sit, are actions we do every day.  We also all put our delight in and meditate on things every day.  The question is “what are you delighting in and meditating on every day?  Who do you walk in step, stand, or sit with?  Would their actions line up with the laws of God?  The Lord watches over the ways of the righteous but the path the wicked take only leads to destruction.

It may seem fun, cool, or even good when you finally fit in with the cool crowd but their path could lead you away from God. Things in your life will start to self destruct because of the direction your life is headed the wrong way.  Just like symptoms of a viral infection can stay dormant for a few days before they become noticeable, your friendship choices may seem ok right now, but eventually symptoms of destruction in your life will become noticeable.  God lays out the recipe here in Psalms 1. Choose wisely, choose the Lord, and chose the right friends.
