Prayer Works

2 Chronicles 30: 18-20

“Although most of the many people who came from Ephraim, Manasseh, Issachar and Zebulun had not purified themselves, yet they ate the Passover, contrary to what was written. But Hezekiah prayed for them, saying, “May the Lord, who is good, pardon everyone who sets their heart on seeking God—the Lord, the God of their ancestors—even if they are not clean according to the rules of the sanctuary.” And the Lord heard Hezekiah and healed the people.”

I can remember putting my truck back together after a long hard repair job and hoping it would work after the repair was done.  It did not matter how many times or what parts I replaced, I still got that feeling in my stomach that reminded me of “what if it does not work?”

Pastor Joe, during pursuit week said “If prayer does not work then why are we even here?”   Very strong words.  He went on to say we should not just look at our lives, throw up our hands, say that this is just how it is, and we have to grin and bear it.  For me and for all the doubters here is just one of those times in the Bible the good Lord chose for us to read so it reminds us that prayer really does work.

If you are wondering who to pray to, well then, Robert Morris said it best when he said, “the last time I checked, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and God all have a name, it is God the son, God the Holy Spirit, and God the Father.  I start my prayers by simply saying “Father”, it covers it all and I end my prayers saying “in Jesus Name I pray amen.”

Hezekiah prayed that the Lord would pardon everyone for not being ceremonially cleansed before the Passover, which was required by Mosaic law.  God heard Hezekiah’s prayer and healed the people but most of us miss one part.  Hezekiah prayed that the Lord would pardon those who “set their heart on seeking God”.  The question today is what is your heart seeking?  Hezekiah’s heart was in the right spot when he prayed and the Lord heard his prayer and answered it.  We can all go merrily down the road barking a shopping list to God, calling it prayer and then we convince ourselves that prayer does not work when stuff we asked for does not show up.  God is not amazon.com. Your heart has to be seeking after him.  Your prayers will change once you set your heart on seeking the Lord. Before that time happens you may be better off shopping online for your stuff rather than praying it to God.  Prayer works, plain and simple.  It works best for the ones who’s heart is set on the Lord.  Where is your heart today?
