“But after Uzziah became powerful, his pride led to his downfall. He was unfaithful to the Lord his God, and entered the temple of the Lord to burn incense on the altar of incense.”
Uzziah was known as the king of Judah who had leprosy. He contracted that skin disorder while he was screaming at the temple priests for not letting him burn incense on the altar of incense in the temple of the Lord, it just appeared on his forehead and everyone saw it. After this Uzziah was banished from the society and lived the remainder of his days secluded from everyone while his son ran the kingdom.
You may be asking why all this punishment and leprosy for wanting to burn incense. In order to answer that you must realize that everyone of us has a lane we are to stay in. Uzziah was not a priest and therefore, under Mosaic law, could not burn incense. In pride, he was going to do it anyway thus setting in motion the arguing and the leprosy. The root cause of his issue was pride.
The Lord brought success to Uzziah in war and power for Judah, this went straight to his head and the result was pride. We often fall into this trap ourselves. We let the natural success given by the Lord corrupt our spirit and the result is pride. Pride can derail a godly spirit just as it did in Uzziah’s case. We then find ourselves doing things we were never meant to do and stepping out of our lane.
Ephesians 6:13 says ” Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.” Paul is reminding us that the God who put you in this place can move in that place and all you have to do is stand firm on the Lord’s promises. The Bible points out that we rely on God and not on our own abilities. Uzziah let pride get the best of his decision making skills and he stepped out of his lane.
Today stay in your lane. God does not need your help. Be sensitive on where the Holy Spirit leads you and be careful not to be over-Christian overstepping your role. Remember Jesus came with grace and truth. Put your trust in the Lord and not on your abilities and just as Moses said “today you will see the salvation of the Lord.” God is the one who levels the mountain in our lives so don’t bring a pickaxe and shovel while everyone else shows up with lawn chairs. Rest in the Lord, don’t wrestle.
