How to Pray

Psalm 18:2

“The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
    my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,
    my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”

Before we go into the life and time of King David I thought a timeline would be appropriate.

The Bible says when Samuel anointed David as king he was only a boy.  In fact he was so young that Jesse, his dad, did not even recognize him as someone Samuel could anoint to be king.  After reading some articles online, they said that David was a boy between 10-15 years of age when he was anointed to be king.

Fast forward just one chapter and we find the mighty Goliath and David squaring off on the battlefield.  His father sent him to front lines bring his brothers some food because he wasn’t even old enough to join the army yet.  Imagine going to front lines as a 16 year old boy and staring at a whole army of soldiers over the age of 20 in prime fighting shape and they all are afraid to fight this giant from the Philistines. David was maybe 16- 18 years of age when fought and killed Goliath.  After David kills Goliath, Israel has its next star, a young Troy Bolton if you will.  Handsome, daring under pressure, and a talented musician. So much so that he upstages King Saul, and he starts a long, hard journey of running for his life from Saul until Saul dies.

David is anointed king at the age of thirty.  So 15 long years have passed from the time David was anointed king until he actually became king. David reins as king for the next 40 years.  So he was 70 years old when he passes away.  In that period of time David becomes one the most influential people ever to lead Israel.  He even is honored by God when God used the direct linage of David to the birth of Jesus Christ through Mary.  Jesus is even called “a son of David” in Matthew.

I often wonder how to pray and think as a Christ follower. If I could only listen to how a great man of God did it, then I could repeat what he said and do that.  This is a common question among Christians, just how to pray and what to pray. Well, David wrote a total of 73 prayers and songs in the book of Psalms.  So the next time you read any of these Psalms be thinking, “this was a prayer of King David!” David was not perfect and committed some very bad sins in his life, but in the end he was labeled as man after God’s own heart.  A real person with real issues and he poured his heart out towards God in his prayers found in the book of Psalms. You might ask the question how we should pray. Well a good start is to read the book of Psalms and see how King David did it.
