Running Out

John 2:3-5

“When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

The wine is running out.

Our lives are like this wedding in Cana. Life is moving and we plan an event. We know the place, we know owners and put down a deposit for this event. The wine is running out.

We have our guest list. We invite all of our friends and their parents. Some of the main attendees ask to invite others so we say, “the more the merrier.” All of our plans that we have made are beginning to take shape. The wine is running out.

Its the big day of the event. The party is happening and we are running around making sure all of the plans we made are moving forward. The guest list, the food, the drinks, the desert, the event timing. Is it possible we have forgot anything? Going over the list we are sure all is taken care of. The wine is running out.

Party time! The guests are showing up. We make sure we greet all of them. After all, we have planned this for a while and the family honor is at stake. We must have enough food, enough desert, enough entertainment to last the 7 days. The wine is running out.

Someone invited Jesus and His disciples. I guess the more the merrier. They seem to be having a good time. Mary, the mother of Jesus, notices that a problem arises. The wine had run out and its only day 3. I thought we purchased enough? I thought we planned for this? We seemed to have enough and out of nowhere we find out the wine ran out.

If we are not careful we seem to plan our lives with what we seem will last or get us though to the next party. The path we have chosen are all steps carefully or nonchalantly planned by us with our own wants and desires in mind. We would never plan to fail, at least that is what we said at the beginning. Now, all of our plans and preparations seem to be dwindling and running out. No one really notices yet but a train wreck is coming. A train wreck of your life. Why? Because all of your plans have been found wanting and lacking. The wide road of sin has taken you far from the peace that it promised. Instead, you are forced to realize those choices you made only led you to a disaster waiting to happen.

It is in these moments we must realize that our plans never will be enough. Our plans and preparations will always come up short and be used up before the party ends. Proverbs 14:12 says, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but the end it leads to death.” The wine is running out.

Is your life running out? Does the party seem to be crashing and it is only half way through? Jesus has the solution. Jesus says in John 4:13-14, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” His plans are always better for us and His wine never runs out! Do you know Him?
