Faith First

Genesis 39:3-4

“When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did, Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned.”

There are certain things in life we must put first. If we want to drive our vehicles, we must put gas in the tank or charge them up. If we want to turn on the lights we must pay the electric bill. If we want respect and responsibility at work we must work hard and maintain an attitude of humility. Some things must be first in order for us to experience the blessings that come later.

Here we find Joseph, he was carried off into slavery and then sold to Potiphar, an Egyptian official.  Not a very happy time for Joseph at all.  Just a few days earlier Joseph was with his family.

You might find yourself in a similar spot, one that seems unjust or just plain bad.  “When his master saw…”  Potiphar was a man who did not follow God or his ways but he could see that the Lord was with Joseph and that he prospered in everything he did.  Joseph was not held captive by his place in life, Joseph put God first in his life and it showed.

Often times we seem to be defined by our circumstances.  Joseph had every right to be mad at God and blow off his faith because, well, look at where he was. One day a favored son of Israel and two or three days later a slave in a foreign country.  It may seem difficult to drag your faith out in times like these. It will most likely be easier to put your faith in God in a jar, put the lid on it, and display it on your wall of broken promises.

If anything jumps out of this story is it how God blesses Joseph in the worst of places.  Do not let your circumstance limit God. If you put him first (before your situation) then even the people around will be able to see that the Lord is with you and that you will prosper in all you do.  Joseph was still a slave and put in prison, but the Lord prospered him where he was. Always keep your faith first.
