The Flavor of Salt

Mathew 5:13

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?”

As I was driving this morning I remembered an article that I have yet to read entitled “Sodium Aims for the Heat, Excess salt linked to cardiovascular death.”  I got to thinking how often we as humans try to preserve or make things taste better by using salt.  I have been found guilty of this myself from time to time.  Too much salt over a long period of time and you could be at risk of cardiovascular problems. What if you put salt on your food and it does not change the flavor at all?  Being a little disappointed I would probably throw that salt away because it did not do what it was designed to do.

Jesus said that we are salt of the earth.  As Christians, we bring spiritual salt to the table of life and to whom is sitting at this table it gets sprinkled over their lives.  Upon tasting their life once again with this new spice that has been added, they taste an increase in flavor and enjoyment sets in.  The Holy Spirit then begins to work on preserving them with the blood of Christ and the gospel message.

I fear sometimes that my spiritual salt has lost its saltiness, yet I continue to use it as though it were salty.  It is like using salt on your food and it has lost its saltiness. Today, reflect on how salty you are in Christ. If someone tasted your brand of “the good news” would it taste great or would it be dressed up like it is good only to reveal your own saltiness has masked the true flavor of Christ?

Father God, may my spiritual salt be refreshed every day so it can preserve and give new flavor to who you choose to send me.  May the wisdom that you give me be used for preserving and showing the flavor of Christ.  Amen.
