Not by Works

Ephesians 2:8-11

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

I am reminded of the times I was not so happy with timing at work. It would seem that I would work and work and nothing would get done. Focusing on only myself, I got angrier because I was unaware of any other happenings outside of myself. Looking back I can say that the grace of God was covering me and His favor was upon me. I found out years later that there were other things in play during those times of seemingly little movement. God was working behind the scenes and teaching me to rely upon grace rather than works.

This verse is very popular among Christians.  We “have been” not “will be” or “in the coming days” saved by grace.  Praise God because I would not want to be measured by my works and too often we measure our Christianity by works.  Oh yes we say we have been saved by grace but we live our Christian lives out measuring works for Christ or the church.  If we are not careful we will turn our salvation from “not from yourselves” into “by yourselves” and wonder why the “joy of our salvation” is nowhere to be found.  We are God’s handiwork and he prepared in advance good works for us to do.

Today, Father, I pray that you reveal those good works you have prepared for me in advance to do.  Help me not to do “Christianity” in works but live out my life by your grace.  Amen
