Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.
Let it go. What a concept. While most of us consider ourselves smart enough about most things, we all encounter a step of faith at some point. For example, one of my daughters was learning how to spell when she was very young. I asked her to spell cat, and with complete confidence, she said, “Dad, it is spelled KAT!” I am glad to report that as now a young woman she can spell cat the right way. However, when she was younger, her understanding of how to spell cat was not correct. She had to let it go.
Proverbs 3 tell us to trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. It goes on to say that we should submit to Him in all our ways and He will make our paths straight. I read this verse and the word “all” is used two times. Once to reference our heart and the other reference our ways. This implies that all of our life needs to be submitted to Him and we don’t get to hold on to any of it.
2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” There is it again, the word “all.” All things become new. We must walk this walk of faith knowing it would be wise not to hold on to our own understanding and be renewed by the Word of God daily. Those old habits; let them go. Those old friends; let them go. Those old addictions; let them go. All things have become new. Jesus does not need your old anything to do something new in your life. All He wants is your heart.
Walking by faith and not by sight is understanding that you don’t need to see the destination, all you have to do is trust in God keep moving forward. If you will commit to letting your life go and submitting all your ways to Him, you will see your paths in life straighten up. John 3:16 tells us that God so loved the world that he gave us His son to die on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins. Jesus, dying on the cross cried out, “It is finished!” He let His connection with His Father go and carried all of our sins so He could be the spotless lamb that was sacrificed for us once and for all.
Therefore, we don’t have to carry the burden of sin nor do we have to live in sin either. Strikingly, it is one of the hardest things to do is let it all go. There is an old expression, “You never see a U-Haul following a hearse.” Your old self likes to hold on to your past and you wear it like a ball and chain. Today choose to let it go. Give it all to Christ. Acknowledge Him in all your ways and learn to walk with open hands giving everything in your life to Christ. Let it go!
Prayer: Father I pray that we all learn to let it go. I pray that we let everything we like to hold on to go. The earth is the yours and everything in it and I pray that my actions reflect your ownership, because we are stewards of your creation. I pray that we don’t lean on our own understand but we that acknowledge you in all of our ways and let you direct our paths in Jesus name, amen.
