The Lame Beggar

Acts 3:2

“Now a man who was lame from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts.”

It was a common walk for Peter and John.  Every day at 3 pm they would head to temple courts to pray.  No doubt they passed the same old structures, the same old houses, even passed the same people maybe every time.  We also have a routine we stick to every day.  Whether your work requires a commute or you work from home, we all do our thing.  The common coffee stops, the common breakfast taco place, even the same old route to work with the same cars you seem to get stuck behind.  It is all very familiar.  Some days I confess, it gets boring.  God I need something different because I see the same things every day, I feel stuck in a rut.

This time however, Peter and John run across a lame beggar at the temple courts. The only difference is that this time, they have been baptized in the Holy Spirit. The day before, Peter preached and over 3000 people turned to follow Jesus. This walk would be different. The beggar asks for something, anything, because he is lame and cannot do much. Peter looks at him and says, “Look at this!” Peter reaches down and tells the beggar that he does not have silver or gold but what he does have is the healing power of Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit. He tells the man to rise and walk and he is healed.

You never know who or what you will run across on that very familiar path you take every day. Allowing the Holy Spirit to speak to us and guide us on our way, no matter how familiar, should be what we do everyday. You are a walking billboard for Christ everywhere you go. Peter and John sure were and after the lame man was healed their popularity went up tremendously.

What are you broadcasting on that very familiar path you take every day? If the Lord brings a hurting soul your way will you recognize it? We should be looking for that everywhere we go. A simple awareness of the Holy Spirit speaking to you could mean a lifetime of difference to someone you pass everyday. Be the light every day. Don’t just turn it on for Sunday morning.

God what do you want me to see today? Guide me into your perfect peace and show me the path I am to walk down today.
