Cain’s Anger

Genesis 4:6-7

“Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you just rule over it.”

The moment is ripe for a decision.  Events play out before us and as we watch them, we often ponder which hand we will play when it is our turn.  My translation says that Cain brought “some” of the fruits while Abel brought the “fat portions.”  I can see Cain playing out the events and possible outcomes in his mind knowing full well that he did not bring the best to the Lord while his brother brought the best of the best.  We often do the same thing.  We mess up and play out different events and possible outcomes while weighing the cost of our decisions.  Will we confess and humble ourselves, or will we stand in defense and get offended?

It is at this point, the Lord steps in to talk to Cain.  A simple question of “Why are you angry?” starts the dialog.  The Lord could see the anger in his face and stops him before making another move. We all get to this point at times.  Whether we have messed up or are on the receiving end of something, anger comes and requires a moment of choice. We can either choose to sin in our anger and lash out or remain calm and trust that God has our back.

Don’t be deceived, sin will never get you where you need to go no matter how wrong you feel or angry you get.  Sin has its way of mastering all of us.  You can read all the self help books and be Tony Robbins biggest fan, yet still not able to control the sin in your life. The power of Jesus is the only way to control sin. When Jesus died on the cross, He reclaimed the keys of death, hell, and the grave and gave all of us a way to live as He did on this earth, walking with the Father of the Universe at our side. Jesus was tempted by Satan at His weakest, after 40 days of fasting and wandering in the desert. Jesus duked it out with Satan and defeated him with the Word of God on His lips, “It is written!”  Today, begin your day with “It is written!”  Speak the word of God and overcome sin.  You don’t have to choose the way of Cain to avenge your anger.  Vengeance is mine says the Lord! Let Him do the job as you keep practicing the forgiveness of Jesus.
