“Then the eyes of both of them were opened…”
The truth is that we all begin our lives at the point that Adam and Eve were in verse 7. We are born into a sinful world because of the fall of Adam and Eve. Praise the Lord that Jesus came and died on the cross so we can once again have eternal life and our sins are forgiven. Part 2 of our “Satan’s Plan” deals with our reactions rather than the plan itself.
When our kids were young they would get into stuff and realize that they had messed up. Without the ability to hide all day long, they would have to rejoin the family and when they did, their attitude was different. It was withdrawn like they were hiding things. We automatically knew that something was wrong. When confronted, they would come up with all kinds of excuses to justify their behavior. Adam and Eve did the same thing. Sin has a way of pushing us further from the Lord. When we are confronted about our sin, we tend to excuse it or come up with a justification for it.
Listen to the reaction of Adam and Eve:
1. They realized they were naked and sewed fig leaves to cover themselves.
2. They said they were afraid and hid from God.
3. Adam said “The women whom you gave me, gave me the fruit to eat.”
4. Eve said “The serpent deceived me.”
If you look closely at the responses they all deal with a selfish tone. Just like my daughters trying to avoid the punishment of doing something bad, Adam and Eve turn into Mr. and Mrs. “Not my fault.” They go directly to the blame game.
Maybe you have heard it from your friends. “Everyone is doing it nowadays.” “Things are different than when you were a teenager.” “Why can’t you just accept it?” “My friends don’t have to go to church all the time.” We can go on and on. We tend to excuse our sin when we are confronted with it just like Adam and Eve did. It was his fault or her fault or I had to do it. With the Lord in your heart, you have to realize that sin is not fun anymore. It is like oil and water, they don’t go together. The Holy Spirit will remind you of your sin until it becomes something you avoid.
What is the Holy Spirit reminding you of today? For Adam and Eve, the minute they sinned their eyes were opened, and they realized they had messed up. It is not too late. Satan’s plan was to get you to this point so you could never turn back out of shame. Jesus is waiting for your return to embrace you. While sin has a price we must pay, Jesus took away the sting of sin which is death and separation from Him. We might have to live with the consequences of our sins but rejoice because we have a spot in heaven. So what, you messed up. Come back to the Lord and He will guide your life with a renewed heart for Him.
